Looking for a big car

Well ladies, I need some  help.  We are going to Chicago for 3 days over Spring Break.  We leave on the 30th.

My beloved Envoy has a broken rear axle and will most likely not be repaired by that time.  DH can and will do it, but he is getting one day off a week right now and his off time is being dedicated to helping DS with his Eagle project.  We are going to be renting a car for the trip.

Sooo, let's talk about DS.  The kid is 6'4" tall, he has really long legs and a really tall trunk.  He needs a ton of leg room and a ton of head room.  I have no idea what other models of cars will accomodate him.

I need either a large sedan or an SUV with tremendous amounts of leg and head room in the back.  Do any of you have such a car  you would recommend?  He is a major PITA if he doesn't have enough room (i.e. his legs crammed against the back of the seat in front of him).  The smaller SUV's won't work.

Recommendations?  Thanks.

  • My 6'5 friend fits in my Ford Explorer? But I think he reclines the seat a bit.

  • As silly as it may sound... I would be tempted to visit a place like Carmax and just try vehicles out!

  • we have a 2012 honda pilot it has tons of leg room!
  • I know renting an SUV is crazy expensive so a Sedan will be a lot cheaper.

We used to have a Chevy Impala and it had crazy leg room in the back seat. It was very comfy for my BIL who is 6'4.
  • If you got a sedan, your son would do ok in a lincoln town car.  SUVs are pricey to rent but, I think if you are traveling you will also need room for luggage... so, a suburban or a tahoe.  i am 5'1 and can easily drive a suburban.  :)

  • My bil is 6'6" and drives a Ford Taurus. I know they shopped around for leg room and height and are really happy with it.

  • lincoln towncar/mercury grand marquis/ford crown victoria.  They're all basically the same car just varying degrees of fancyness and all have lots of leg room.
  • For flex has tons of room and good gas mileage... or the Dodge Durango.

  • It really depends on how much leg room is needed in the front. My fiance is 6'5" and he sat behind my friend in a Camry, because she could put her seat up. However, FI and I are both in the front with seats all the way back (I'm 5'11" long legs) only shorter people fit in back. My sister's CRV is pretty roomy in the back. I usually sit with my legs kind of sideways in a backseat
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I work with a guy (at least for two more weeks) who drives a newer Taurus.  I'll check his backseat out this week to see if it would work.  That really didn't come out sounding right, did it?

Lansing's airport is smaller and their inventory of rentals seems to a bit more limited than I was expecting.  Suppose I could throw the kid a rope and some roller skates and tell him to hang on tight...
  • My fiance is 6'7 and he currently drives a Honda Civic coupe.  It actually has better leg room for him than my Accord.
