Purchase Groomsman's Outfit?

Hi Everyone!

We asked my fiance's good friend from high school to be in our wedding party.  Over a month ago we asked the groomsmen to purchase their outfits for the wedding.  The outfit totals $70 from JC Penny.  Today we got a text from the groomsman saying that he is unable to purchase the clothing due to financial issues and he is sorry but won't be able to stand up with us unless we figure something out.  My fiance and I are thinking of buying the clothes for him, but neither of us have much money at all (just out of college...looking for jobs) so we'd be putting this on our credit card to pay off in the future.

Any suggestions on what to do?!?!  The wedding is next weekend...

Thanks!!!!!!

  • If it's not a serious hardship for you, I'd just buy it for him.
  • Just buy it for him if you can but you don't have to tell anyone else that you did.

  • I agree with Milkduds. If you can afford it, help the dude out.

  • Well, do you want him in the wedding or not?

  • Pay for the outfit.  $70 really?  You'll be passing out way more than that in the next week.  Don't tell any of the other GMs.

  • Just buy it for him. If the other guys already know he might be backing out and then poof he shows up in a tux they might wonder where the money came from, but guy dynamics are very different and I suspect none of them would care. Your groomsman might also be more comfortable being "loaned" the money, but don't go there unless he suggests it after you offer to pay for him. If he would like for it to be considered a loan, go along with it.

  • Purchase his outfit and tell him not give you guys a wedding gift.

  • Correction: purchase the outfit or tell him he can forgo a wedding gift if he buys the outfit himself.  But, if times are tough he probably won't be able to give a gift either.  So, then just buy the outfit.
