Re: Has the Octomom dr ruling been discussed?

  • Not that I know of. I don't know what the ruling is/was (just heard that he could lose his license---which he should) ...i suppose I'll look at the link now.

  • absofuckinglutely the doctor was negligent. In so, so many ways.

  • Yeah, that buck should have stopped with the doctor. "You have six children already and you want IVF? Sure!" ummmm, no. Bad, bad judgment on both their parts, more so on the doctor because he had the right to refuse the procedure. And didn't.

  • I agree with it 100%.  And I hope he loses his licence.
  • He should have known better, IMO. It's his job to know better than to do what he did.

  • I think calling the doctor "negligent" is somewhat of an understatement.
  • Ditto everyone else.

His actions were so bad on so many different levels.

Coincidently, I have an appointment with a reproductive endocrinologist this month.  I'm curious to see what the physician's feelings are on the entire thing.

What is very interesting to me is that Octomom makes headlines but the Gosselin children don't.  My understanding is that she was over-implanted as well.
  • That's true, but at least the Gosselin's (then) had a stable home.  Octomom's actions just seems so irresponsible.

I can't believe that he still has his license!

  • His actions are beyond irresponsible since there were mental and physical health repercussions.  And then we can debate the social ramifications and intelligence in artificially inseminating a woman on government assistance.

But I think in the grand scheme of things, it's something that really needs to be brought to light.  And I think at LEAST on some level, that's what contributed to the deterioration of the Gosselin's marriage.

Kate clearly could be pregnant given her pregnancy with the twins so why so it also appears that she had too many embryos implanted based on the guidlines in the article.
  • It is my understanding that most people are "over implanted" because the likelihood of every one surviving are low. The Gosselins originally had 7 babies, but one didn't survive the rest of the pregnancy. Fwiw,  I personally had a TA in college who was implanted with five at a time, at one point only one took, and she m/c. She was going to try again, but I lost touch with her, so I don't know if she ever did.

I do, however agree, that the doc was in the wrong to be doing it considering Octomom's financial and other stability in her home and with her other children. The Gosselins at the point of implantation had decent jobs and a home that they owned, with job prospects. At that point, they had NO tv show stuff either.
  • I thought she had IVF with the twins, too, but I could be making that up.  Even if she had successful implantation before, it's no guarantee that other ones will take.

I agree that it shouldn't be happening, though.  There are unethical doctors out there (as there are in every profession), and it sucks that they make everyone else look bad.

Yes, but implanting 2-3 is the norm.  7 is not and they reported that it's far off from the guidelines.

  • That's also my understanding Sucrets.  The implantation of 7 embyos was excessive in their case as well.

And it's frightening to me how we glorify that behavior.    In the end, do ANY of them appear to be acting as good parents?
  • Oh, I agree, banana.  It's sickening to see what is considered acceptable these days.

I heard a piece on NPR about how awful people can online (and I do put myself in this category sometimes) and how it's modeled and revered by popular culture.  It makes me worried for the future...at least I do it consciously.
