NWR: Spray tan?

Hey everyone,

Decided to post on this bored because you girls are always pretty quick to reply!

FI and I are going on a cruise for newyears and I decided to get a tanning bed membership because I didn't want to be completely pale and usually if I get a bit of a base tan I won't burn. (Assuming it is actually warm enough in the bahamas to wear bathing suits)

In my highschool and early college years I used to go to the tanning bed alot and never had a problem. As I got older I started to care about the potential side effects more and quit going for the most part. So, Monday was my first time going to the tanning bed in around a year. I went Monday, yesterday, and today and everything was fine the first 2 days but when I got home today and went to get in the shower I noticed I have hives all over my chest.

I'm not allergic to anything that I am aware of, havn't eaten anything unusual, or used any different lotions or body washes. So, all I can figure is maybe its the tanning bed? And it makes me really not want to go back to the tanning bed!

Now im thinking about just doing a spray tan a few days before we leave for the cruise but I have never gotten one before. My skin gets really dry in the winter and im worried tat it will get all flakey and peel off. Also, I'm worried ill look orange!

Anyone who has gotten a spray tan...do they look good and stay on well? And has anyone else ever gotten hives from a tanning bed?

Does getting a spray tan really give you a base tan? Doesn't it just color your skin? Wouldn't you potentially burn anyway?

These are honest questions. I don't tan and don't use spray tans, but I've always wondered that about spray tans.

  • I did a spray tan once before. I am very pale, and it didn't turn out well. The tan faded strangely off of certain places and not others.... I ended up with weird lines in sweat zones (behind my knees, etc). I know for many people it worked out well, I just haven't had great results!
  • I've gotten rashes and the such from tanning.  I don't know if they count as hives, but I get rashy.  Happens if I'm out in the sun too long, too, not just in a tanning bed.  Also, I glitter in the sun.  And I'm emo and overrated.

This is what happens when I mock someone else for their double post.

Yea it wont give you a base tan to keep from burning. But I don't want to keep going to the tanning bed and getting hives if thats what is causing it.

Hmm that made me think of another question. Can you put sunscreen over a spray tan?
  • Also, the rays that a tanning bed use are mainly only UVA rays, so even if you have a "base tan" from a tanning bed, it won't protect you against a burn from the sun because the sun emits UVA and UVB rays.

  • I have Cherokee Indian in my blood so I don;t usually burn to bad and I have never gotten hives or a rash from being out in the sun before but thats all i could figure this would be from.

I'm afraid its going to fade weird and look streaky like a pp said.

  • oh okay cool! Is mystic tan that thing that they have at some tanning beds where you stand in it and it sprays you?
  • I live in kind of a small town (even though my profile says Atlanta I actually live about an hour outside of Atlanta) and I'm pretty sure none of our tanning beds have the mystic thing. I know for sure we have the ones where someone sprays you because one of my best friends worked at the tanning bed and had to spray people. It kinda creeps me out too. If my friend still worked at the tanning bed I think I would be okay letting her spray me but she doesn't work there anymore.

An airbrush tan is where a person sprays you.  A spray tan is a machine that sprays you.

Personally, I like VersaSpa over Mystic if anyone in your area offers that.  It is still a machine but a better quality product and also it drys you off afterwards.  They only last a few days though in my experience.

  • I do the mystic tan often. The key is shower that morning and exfoliate really good. It will make your skin absorb the coloring better. Also when putting on the lotion on your feet and hands.. Pay attention! Make sure you rub it in really good and evenly... If you don't you will have funny lines and your ankles and hands will be funny looking. ( i forgot to do that last time).

If there is a salon in your area where a person actually sprays you.. I would recommend that .. it is much more even.

  • I agree with the pp. I do spray tans weekly and have pretty good results. Every once in a while I'll have some tint around my fingers but it's usually gone within a few days and it isn't very noticeable. I've never had a problem with streaking either. I use the level three but my skin takes it pretty well. You should start with a level two. I also use Banana Boat Sunless Tanner, it's amazing. I prefer the machine that sprays you over a person doing it.
  • SD:  Have you used the Jergins one? That is what I use. I havent used Banana Boat before but now I am curious.

  • Yea I've used the jergens but it takes forever to actually build up a good color. The Banana Boat Summer Color shows up almost immediately. Wash your hands quick though because it stains pretty bad. Walmart sells it for like $7, you should try it.
  • I think I will. I really wanted to tan as I call it before the wedding. I just have absolutely no time to go.  So I have been using Jergins.. but your right it takes forever.

  • I've used Mystic several times over the year and plan on doing it before leaving for Hawaii in 2 weeks.

PPs have pointed it out but I second...shower/exfoliate before you go, lotion up after your shower, be very aware of the barer cream to block the spray (hands & feet), use a lower level of color if you are really pale and be sure to pat not rub dry.

Afterwards, keep lotioned up. It helps.

My tans usually last a week but up to 2 weeks. They don't block the sun and it's not a base tan so wear sunscreen (as always). However, I did it before going to Mexico in March a few years back and when everyone else burned (with sunblock), I didn't. I think the dark skin helps a little. Wear sunscreen!
