High School Reunion?

So my high school reunion is coming up next year and someone in our class is planning and asking for ideas. All I know is what I see on TV or in movies where people basically have a grown up prom in their school gym. So I want to know, what did your class do for your high school reunion? Please tell me what was planned, whether you attended or not.

Re: High School Reunion?

  • First, I absolutely love your sig picture.  You look so pretty!

I only attended my 20th, and I had a ball.  There wasn't much by way of activities, but they played 1985 music and there was a very amusing slide show (that hair!  those shoulder pads!).   Mostly people just laughed and talked and reminisced.  It was really, really fun.

  • Mine is next year, but a lot of my friends are older than me and they've had theirs over the last couple years.  They have all been a rented out room (kinda like a banquet hall) with dinner or appetizers and drinks.  So I guess kind of like a prom (or wedding), but it's always been at a hall or restaurant, and not the school gym.  Tickets are usually around $30-50 per person and it will cover the food and drinks, although sometimes the bar is limited to beer and wine.

  • My ten-year is next year! Unfortunately/fortunately I was the class secretary so I am probably going to have to help with the planning....and therefore will attend.  My high school typically rents out a bar/hotel ballroom/etc. and has an bar/food package. I sure don't want to have a grown up prom in out gym; it gets HOT in there darn it!
  • Thanks, OWN!

jhoebel, that's an option right now. But apparently another option is a laid back BBQ type thing on the beach near town. But I guess people want the option to bring their kids to a BBQ. I'm not a parent so I would feel really bad saying I don't want to be surrounded by people's children, but seriously, I don't want to be surrounded by people's children when I'm trying to catch up my classmates.

  • Mine was last year, and it was a cocktail party in some random art gallery downtown. I don't know how it was originally advertised, but I just happened to see a flyer about it on FB a few days before it happened on my HS's class page. I should point out that my former BFF and current arch nemesis planned it, so that probably explains why I wasn't technically invited. I wouldn't have gone anyway, because I don't give two shiits about what anybody from HS is doing. From the small group of pictures I saw after the fact, it wasn't a heavily attended event. And IIRC, there was a cover charge.
  • for one reunion we gathered a the home of a girl from our class. Her husband graduated a year before us. They lived in the country on about 30 acres with a big pond, "pool" house. It was very casual, everyone brought their own drinks and a dish/snacks to share. We all chipped in $5 a person ahead of time for pizza and subs.   Guys that were in a band got together got back together to play for it. Very casual evening, lots of fun.

We had one where we did a "dress up"dinner at banquet hall for Saturday night and on Sunday we had a picnic for everyone and their kids. Everybody brought their own meat to grill, dishes to share.  That was fun because we got some of both - adult party Saturday night but we got to see everyone's little kids.

We also had one where we chartered buses from our home town to Sandusky, Ohio (1 hr away) and did a sunset dinner cruise on Lake Erie.  I didn't make that one, I had another commitment.

If you're at the age where everyone has little kids you might suggest the 2 day event. Dinner or some kind of adult party on Saturday Night (banquet hall or casual gathering at someone's home) and a picnic with kids included on Sunday afternoon.

My class was only 200 people, about 100 usually show up to a reunion.

For our 5th, they rented out a bar or had a private room at some bar.

Don't know about the 10th yet.  But it's this year.  I missed the fifth, and I was a bit bummed.  Everyone got wasted and started making out with everyone else!!  I don't think we're in the same place in our lives 5 years later to have a repeat of the 5th.  Oh well, it sounded like a fun party.
  • 10th was in a hotel ballroom and 25th was in a restaurant private room. Both times was a full dinner (the second was buffet; I think the first might have been plated but I don't remember) and a full open  bar. The cost of bar was included in the ticket price.

We didn't really have any special events at either. At the first, there were papers around the room where people could vote for things like "most changed," "most successful," "most children" (kind of an odd thing to vote for since that's not really opinion) and a mock award ceremony. It was fun. Didn't do anything like that at the second.

No kids either time. The point was to reconnect with each other, not a bunch of kids.

Both times it was scheduled for the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, so that people who now live out of state were more likely to be able to attend.
  • I dunno if our class even had a fifth one or not. If they didn't I wasn't invited. And my parent still live in the same house as high school.

H 10th reunion is coming up this October. I believe it is at the local county fairgrounds (yes, I know - he grew up in a small town) and it is a pretty informal kinda of thing with dancing and music. I gotta work on the outfit once I know a little more.
  • My tenth had the 1st night at the high school for families, and the second night was at the place where we had our prom - there was drinking and dancing (I don't remember if we had dinner or not).

My 20th reunion was at a nice restaurant with buffet food and a bar (cash bar), and a slide show outside (my friend put it together, so there were a decent amount of pictures of us; otherwise, there wouldn't have been) - we had a senior tee shirt, a yearbook, and I happened to have the picture from the yearbook of our senior class framed when we graduated.
Then we hit a couple of bars, and found the one our classmate was playing in with his band, and had WAYYYY too much fun. Friend's husband had to come get us.

The 2 day thing is an option right now, but both would require paying. I like the idea of everyone bringing something to share for the BBQ though, because then you only pay for what you eat, basically. Our whole class was about 150.

I didn't attend my ten year one.  I haven't regretted the decision once.  I enjoyed high school, but I didn't feel the need to revisit it.  Especially with air fare being involved.

The best of my understanding what they did from talking to friends who went and seeing pictures -  Friday evening they rented a bar with a huge river patio and had a bunch of bar apps catered.  Everyone caught up and most likely drank far, far too much from nerves.   Saturday they had a "family day" picnic at the local park.  Cooked out all the usual foods and had different actives set up for the children.   Then Saturday evening they rented the "party deck" at the towns minor league baseball team stadium, and everyone hung out  and watched the game.

  • I just realized that this summer would have been our 10 year - and NOTHING was done.

I was thinking..."I know my 10 year must be coming up soon...graduated in 2000...it's 2010...Crap!"  hahaha.  My FI and I graduated same time same place, I called some people around town, no one has heard anything!

    Well, can't help you there!

My husband's class of '99 spents months and months talking about it on facebook, but in the end no one would step up and pick a date or an event, so it ended up never happening. It was really kinda sad, but pretty funny thinking back. Everyone kept saying I can't do this date or I can't do that date and I think everyone was afraid of leaving someone out. It's gonna happen, but whatever.

  • I just attended my 10th. The school plans it and they do all the classes at once. So for my year, they had a reunion for the classes of 2005, 2000, 1995, 1990, 1985, 1980, 1975, 1970, etc.

The alumnae coordinator handles it. Every year they do a mass in the school chapel, followe dby a reception in the gym. Food from local restaurants is provided, they do a slide show, and there's an open bar. They also do tours of the new school additions and whatnot.

It was pretty fun! A lot of my classmates are getting married right now or have small kids, or are in grad school, or are lawyers, etc, so it was nice to catch up. The weird thing, though, is that only 2 people in my class (about 40 of us attended out of a class of 104) brought spouses/dates.

  • Mine will be the same day as my wedding so I won't be attending. They are going to a park and everyone is bringing something to drink. Once everyone is good and drunk they are planning on heading to the fair to hunt down people who didn't make it to the park. Yes, very classy...
  • We just had our's outdoors at a classmate's house.  We had a catered bbq & slideshow.  It went really well.

  • I recently went to my 10th reunion (in 2007).  It was so fun!  We had one day where there was a picnic at a beach, then a cocktail night at a local bar where a lot of folks hung out and then a slightly formal night (cocktail dresses) at a restaurant downtown.  We didn't dance, but there were drinks and a buffet and pictures.  Loads of pictures.  I went to an arts school and we were all really close so it was great to see everyone.
