Is this thing on?

Anyone around?  I am bored.  I wanted to head down to the pride parade today, but H and I have been way too lazy to do anything.  Anyone do anything exciting this weekend?

Re: Is this thing on?

  • It's been kind of a depressing weekend here.  Lots of time at the hospice with DH's aunt.

We did find this totally cool site where you can mail in your old electronics and get Amazon gift cards in exchange, which is pretty sweet: http://greenearthexchange.com/. We got $65 for my ancient broken iPhone!

  • Oh Brie, that sucks.  How is she doing?  How is the rest of the family doing?

I'll have to check out that website, we have so much crap laying around.

  • She's doing as well as can be expected.  The hospice is great and she's not in any pain.  DH's mom's family has been great--they're an awesome bunch and have all been taking shifts so she's never alone.

We did get to spend some time with SIL/BIL last night and had a super-tiny baby shower for her, which was nice.

  • I have such respect for hospice workers - I'm a nurse, and I don't think I'd be able to do it.  That's great that there is such family support, but still such a hard situation.
    When is SIL's baby due?

  • Sorry to hear about you DH's aunt Brie.

Wish I would have known of that site last year. We just cleaned out a lot of stuff.

It is so hot here today. We took the dog a walk at the park, and I thought she would pass out before we got home. Boring today.

  • Our nephew is due October 24th.  I'm so excited--he's our first niece/nephew and I can't wait!  Except it is not really helping my baby fever at all.

  • Kelly, we were going to head to the pride parade and the taste today but they called for rain and it is hot!  Now there is no rain and it is still hot but we too are too lazy to go!

  • I was also going to go to the PRIDE parade but chose not to for fear of the thunderstorms that were supposedly coming. My sister went and someone stole her BlackBerry from her back pocket :(

  • Today is a very weird day. I went out with my parents and had a fun time running around town, but then got a phone call that my sil's dog passed away last night. His stomach flipped (like in Marley and Me) and while the vet was doing the tests to see if she could flip it back she discovered his lymphoma had returned. Sil called her husband who is currently stationed in Libya and they agreed to put him down, as Ben was 13 and had been through a lot over the past few years.

I also have way to much stuff to get done before we leave for Maine on Tuesday, blah.
  • Taste of Chicago - perish the thought in this heat. It's too hot here for much of anything altho I did sit out for a little while in the sun.  I'd prefer not to look hospital pale on wedding day in a few weeks.  Cannot believe FI is out playing 18 holes.

Mom is on her way here from Florida.  She's staying for a few weeks and will go back sometime in late July.  I'll be glad of her help in the next couple of weeks.  I just cannot seem to muster up the proper enthusiasm for this wedding.  Seeing doctor on Tuesday.

Brie - sorry to hear about your aunt.  My dad died of lung CA in October and hospice was so good to him.  God love those people.
  • Brie - are you from Chicago originally?

<div>That's so fun. I'm so excited for my SIL to get pregnant, unfortunately that has not been going well for her.  I never thought I'd be one with baby fever - I actually never wanted kids, now I'm not so sure...</div>

  • I always love the taste - mostly for the people watching.

  • Too many people Kelly.  When I was younger I was more into it and I also lived in the Wrigleyville area so the logistics were easier.  Now I'm a suburban matron and don't get into the city nearly enough. :(
  • Marrin where in the 'burbs do you live?  We're in Aurora

  • Yeah, we're out in the suburbs now as well.  My friends are all still in the city, so we're down there a fair amount.  They are all starting to creep out this way though :)

  • I personally like the 'burbs better....

  • I'z here.

I finally got my butt out of the hotel room and went for a hike.  It was beautiful, but probably not something that should be done at 3pm in the GA summer.  I promptly stopped at marble slab creamery to get some ice cream, thought better of it, and put it back in the fridge.  Now, it's taking all of my willpower to NOT open the freezer.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • My main problems with the burbs (at least where I live) is that you have to drive EVERYWHERE.  I miss being able to walk down the street to the grocery store or whatever.

  • Barb - I'm in Wheaton.  You really like the suburbs better?  I moved out here to be closer to FI - at the time we started dating I was living in Chicago.
  • Hmmmmm...ice cream!  I have some Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ice cream in the freezer and I've looked at it a few times already.

Kelly - yes!  Just walking out the door and being able to walk a block to a small store or a restaurant was heavenly.  When I was married to xH, we were too close to Wrigley Field and that was really no fun on game days, but after we split up I moved to Cumberland and Kennedy Expressway (Norridge area) and it was a nice blend of suburbs and city.
  • I do.  I LOVE it.  I love not living in the hustle bustle of the city, but being able to go in to get my fill when needed.  I love YARDS and fences and inground pools.  I love the ice cream man and children playing in coul-de-sacs!  I love the safe feeling and clean air! :)

We are close enough to go in for drinks or take the train in to a Cubs game when we want but far enough away not to be bothered by the craziness.  I love the "Leave it to Beaver" feel out here! :) Some say I'm crazy!

And I LOVE Wheaton!  We used to live in Carol Stream!

  • About 5 years ago H lived a block from Wrigley as well, it was fun for a year. :)  but year, parking on a game day such a PITA.
I really like the Oak Park area - not that I've spent a ton of time out there, but seems to be a nice blend of both as well.

  • Barb - Wheaton/Glen Ellyn is very pretty.  Seen the Wheaton College campus?  It is so beautiful, esp in the fall.  You really DO like your Leave it to Beaver lifestyle :)  Good for you - everyone should be so happy with their choices.

Kelly - when the night games came along then we had all manner of crazy after the games.  Littering the streets, noise, peeing, drunks - and the parking was a nightmare day or night games.  Lucikly we had a garage but it made it impossible to have people come visit unless they took public trans.
  • I miss Chicago like whoa.  I did my grad school internship there and lived in Lincoln Park.  I LOVED it.  I could walk to the grocery store, my doctor office, bars, restaurants, the zoo...

The only downside was the very limited street parking.  Especially in February.  I actually managed to freeze my tires to the ground as a result of stupidly parking in a puddle and it freezing overnight.  After an hour of pouring salt and trying to pick the ice away, I had to get a tow truck to yank it out.  I didn't even want to take my car with me to Chicago, but my internship required me to have one.

I'm so jealous of all of you going to the taste.  Nothing beats Chicago in the summertime.

  • I love it here in the summer, but I honestly can not stand it in the winter.  I want to move - not sure where yet (and since we won't be able to sell our house without losing about $100K for awhile, we're staying put) but I just can not take these winters anymore.  If I never saw snow again, I would be a happy girl.

Oh, the winters are definitely brutal.  I'm from South Bend, IN.  We got the same weather as Chicago basically, except a little less windy.  The lake effect snow sucked, as did the -20 degree temperatures at times.  It's not worth living in South Bend, but for me, Chicago in the summertime more than makes up for winter.

  • I'm late (went shopping) but Marrin, yeah, I grew up and went to college in Chicago.  Our wedding was in Evanston.  We're hoping to move back in a year or two and I can't wait!
