How comfortable was/is your dress?

On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being you could barely move without major pain/annoyance and 10 being it felt like your pajamas) how comfortable was your dress on your wedding day?

I'm asking because I'm disappointed that mine isn't super comfortable.  I got the v-neck to avoid fussing with a strapless dress all night, but now that it's altered and everything, I'm finding I have to wear the straps on the edges of my shoulders to keep the neckline from gaping.

This makes it feel like the straps are going to fall off (which they aren't, I moved around in it quite a bit) and also prevents me from lifting my arms way up over my head (which I shouldn't have to do much, right?)

So please just tell me I won't notice on the day of because so many more important things will be happening :)

    :) Seriously!

  • I'd get some fashion/double-stick tape to keep the straps in place.

I freaked out because mine was hot and uncomfortable in fittings, but I barely noticed it the day of.  You'll be fine!

  • I have to say mine was a 9. Not quite pajamas (!), but really very comfortable. It was strapless, but altered tightly enough that it didn't move while loose enough that I could breathe easily. I made a point of getting a dress that wasn't super-heavy so moving around would be easy and even wore moderate heels (shocking for me since I usually wear very high heels when I get dressed up).

Do you still have time for more alterations? Because it doesn't sound like it was altered correctly and you don't want to have to worry about gaping and feeling like straps are falling down.
  • You really will be fine - you'll not notice at all, most likely.

I ditto the double-tape idea, though:  my sister used actual duct tape to tape my bra straps in on my wedding day because we had overlooked that little detail.

Mine was pretty tight, but I was able to move around a lot.  I'd say maybe a 4 or 5.  But I did lift my arms up a lot while dancing.

  • Thanks ladies!  Y'all are making me feel a lot better, haha.

Tenofcups, it was altered correctly, it's just that it's a v-neck so for the v to go out at the top, the straps can't go straight up, does that makes sense?

    Mine was a 6-7.
It was very comfy in the beginning of the day, but as the reception went on, a wire popped out and was poking me in the armpit.

And I had the straps put on so that I wouldn't raise my arms (hate armpits, they freak me out) and I actually ended up ripping one of the straps but we had a sowing kit and my mom sowed it back on for me.. It was actually a really sweet moment and I'm kinda glad it happened.

But if I hadn't had straps, then my ladies would have surely made an appearance.

I'm not really sure why that would have to be the case, but I can see what you mean from your picture. Assuming that's you in the picture, it looks like it fits right! But if it's not comfortable, I still think they might be able to do something more with it so that it feels more comfortable and secure.
  • mine was a 9. I barely noticed i had it on. I had a halter top so i used the double stick tape just to make sure the boobies didn't make an appearance and it was fine.

  • When I first tried on my dress, I would have easily called it an 8 or even a 10. I tried it on after a long string of other dresses and was AMAZED at how light and flexible it was in comparison. I felt like I could leap over a building or something, after having tried on so many heavy, heavy dresses.

I just tried it on again a few days ago, for the first time since February. HOLY CRAP. It only FELT light when I had been trying on so many heavier other ones. I couldn't get the GD thing off the hanger and then needed help lifting it.

I'd say I'd rate it a 6 in terms of overall comfort. It's certainly not something I'd wear every day, or even ever again, but it will be tolerable for a night, and could be much worse.
On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

  • ditto PPs that you won't notice. double stick tape is amazing, we had some and people used it. but I would still see if there is anything the seamstress can do to make you feel more comfortable.

mine was about an 8. it was tight, but I specifically requested her to make it tight enough that I could take a normal breath but not a deep breath. I was afraid of it falling down all night.

  • I gave mine a 8-9. I actually thought is was going to be more difficult to get around in, but I was amazed how easy it was for me to do certain things i.e...use restroom, by myself.

It rained at our outdoor ceremony, so I had to keep it off the ground a lot. And once the bustle was done, it was even easier.

  • When I first tried on my dress, it was probably around the 5 range.  The waist wasn't where it should have been on me (I'm 5') and I didn't like that it was strapless.  But once I had the alterations done to adjust the waist and add sleeves, the dress was much more comfortable.  I had no issues wearing it all evening, so I say that it became a 8.
  • I'm a little concerned about my dress because it's so heavy.  It's got a lot of beadwork on it, so I'd say right now a 6.  We'll see how I do on the actual day.  It's more the girdle that's uncomfortable.  It makes my waist look great, but it's kind of hard to wear.

  • 5. It looked awesome, but was really tight in the waist, especially when sitting. Dinner was uncomfortable.
  • honestly, a 10.

i avoided strapless as i didnt feel it was appropriate for my wedding, but even more so as i didnt want to be self conscious about the top all day.

i avoided several gowns that had really scratchy lace.  in fact, my gown had zero lace.

it had a full skirt, but not poofy so i was able to sit just fine.

same with the shoes.  i refused to get huge heels that would have left me uncomfortable. i get grossed out by brides and bridesmaids that go barefoot at their reception because their shoes hurt.  buy comfy shoes and be done with it.

  • Jesus, by the end of the night, I was trying to get Allen to cut the damn thing off me it hurt so bad.  But, I'd had it on for approximately 13 hours by that point, and I defy any garment to be completely comfortable after that amount of time.  What annoyed me most was the "seat belt" around the waist to keep it from slipping down.  UGH.
  • Huh, I doubt my dress will be an 8.  Maybe a 6 or 7 I hope!

Just a caution on the double sided tape.  My FSIL used it for her wedding to try to keep the top of her strapless dress in place on her chest (modesty fears, I think!).  But her dress was very heavy and it ultimately pulled on the tape.  She ended up with big welts from teh tape at the end of hte night!  She said it was *really* painful!  If your dress is altered properly, you really shouldn't need to tape it on to hold it in place.

Might be okay for straps, but just be careful!

See this was me after about 11 hours, and a 4 course meal. I thought I was going to die. My dress was not made for me to eat in, and that night I woke up at 4 am with heartburn so bad I thought I was dying.

  • I'd give mine an 8.

It was comfortable to move around in, but it was hard to sit.  Mainly because I have bad posture and the dressed forced me to *gasp* sit up straight!

This is how mine feels when I try it on. I have been told I won't notice much that day, but right now I just don't believe it. I'm hoping a shot of ouzo will free my fussiness.

  • I'd say mine was about an 8. It was really comfortable, but my corset kept on needing tightening. And the corset kinda of rode up on my when I sat down, so it just took a little re-adjusting. I will say I had to take it easy sitting down and getting up out of the chair (for dinner and the garter toss) but of course H or one of the girls helped me with that.

Damn that good posture! Mine was about an 8 as well. It wasn't too heavy, and I didn't have to adjust it much throughout the night. That being said, I did breathe a huge deep breath when Dh took it off and I changed into jeans and a tank top.
  • You can't get it taken in a little to make it sit better?

If not, I'm sure you won't notice in any case!

My dress was rather comfortable (or if it wasn't, I didn't notice at all).
