aww crap :(

My dog got a big gash on his leg at the dog park tonight.  It was bleeding bad but I didn't think it was all that deep.  I was more worried that he was swimming in nasty water.

Now I have gotten to check it out since the bleeding has slowed and it is DEEP deep.  Like I think its cut a tendon deep. He was shaking so badly when I was trying to clean it. I hate seeing him like that.

I am also fearing the cost of getting it taken care of.  ARG! my hopes of a productive evening have turned into a worrisome night :(

sorry for the lj type post; I just keep fretting about it and needed to share :(

  • Aww :( I'd take him in....
  • Aw poor baby :( Maybe they will just clean it and put a wrap around it.
  • Please take him in.  If he's shaking, that's really bad.  It could be the onset of shock and all sorts of bad stuff.  Please, please find a vet who will look at him tonight.

  • Thanks roxy.  I am for sure taking him in, just really dreading it.

That is what I am hoping for Katie for sure, atleast taking him in I can get some Antibiotics.  With the water he was in its an almost gauranteed infection.

  • Poor pup. Can you talk to your vet about a payment plan or some type of arrangement??

  • oh squirrly for sure not that type of shaking.  He was shaking because I was cleaning it out and it hurt.

I am actually a vet student which means I know I can't take care of it myself, but I know he is ok through night.  Oh and that I have no money.

  • aggie, that makes me feel better and worse.  Surely they'll work something out for you.  Can you not take him to your school?

  • yeah the thing about the school is its about 200% more expensive than taking him elsewhere, even with a discount.   For annuals and stuff its not too bad so they are the only ones he has seen intown, but I couldn't afford to do a minor surgery there.  I am going to ask some classmates for a local reccomendation tomorrow morning.

Sorry about your dog but I wouldnt have waiting. Im sure you know more as a vet student but I still wouldnt have waited. I would be pissed if as a kid my mom saw I had a deep gash and made the executive decision I could just live with it over night because she didnt want to take me to the doctor yet. Not totally the same to some but I see it as the same.

    1. I first read "dog" as "dad" and got to the third post and saw "vet" and realized you weren't talking about your dad.
    2. I'm sorry that happened. My cat got badly injured awhile back and I was so scared. I knew he was going to be okay but I didn't like seeing him in pain.
    3. Maybe the health care plan will extend to vets so we can afford it too ;) (just kidding, they're not that bad...but I've put off taking myself to the doctor because I have no money/insurance so I don't know what I would do if my pet needed to go for something other than just shots too)
  • Yeesh. Poor dog.

I know what it's like to not have any money, but I have to say, that's part of being a pet-owner. Sometimes, you have unforseen costs. You can't just let it go.

  • This makes me really sad. I understand you're a vet student and know your stuff but your dog is in obvious pain and you just let him go through it. My FI and I are by no means swimming around in extra money but a couple months ago when our dog showed up with a huge gash in her side we rushed her to the vet. Mind you it was a Sunday, they were closed, so we had to pay extra for emergency hours. $600 later we had a very sleepy pup but she was okay, not in pain and that was all that mattered. Like PP said, it's part of being a pet owner.

  • Just thought I would follow up.  I got him in today and the vet cleaned it throughly, gave him a tetanus and put him on Antibiotics.  Thankfully no big structures were damaged yay! And he got a really cool bandage to show off.  Thanks for all the T&Ps.

And I just wanted to say.  Trust me I did not let my dog sit in pain all night.  He was really only painful when I was messing with it/ cleaning it up.  Once I got a temp bandage he curled up and was fine.  It was to the point where I knew what was damaged was damaged getting him in quicker wasn't going to change anything thing but the cost, but it was till worrisome that something big could be damaged.  I see how my OP sounded that way, and I understand and agree with your concern.  Money is a factor for me, but not enough to make my dog suffer all night.

  • Well glad he's doing better!
  • I'm glad your puppy is doing better! which park were you in?

and, too bad I didn't see this earlier. I would have recommended you take him to Dr. Bond. he's quality without being super expensive. my dog goes to him.
