Moving out of state right after wedding... where to send gifts?

Is it horribly rude to put on the wedding webpage something to the effect of, "less than a week after the wedding we are packing our cars and driving several thousand miles to our new home, please hold the gifts until about 2 weeks after the wedding so we have less sh*t to move"?

Or is that more for my mom/FMIL to spread that news than for me to say explicitly?

  • I'm 90% sure there's a card that you can include with your wedding invitations that have your future address on it (if you have it)... hold on i'm going to do some digging.

  • got it:

    At Home Card:

This simple card is often the size of a business card and serves much the same purpose. It is meant to inform, by way of invitation enclosure, invited guests of two important things. First it provides the address at which the happy couple will soon start their new life together and second it informs them of new married names if a change in fact has been made.

  • do you have the option of having gifts mailed to your parents' house or FI's parents' house?

  • Could you have them sent to a parent or friend's house?  I have had friends do this and it worked out well for them.

  • We moved from Chicago to San Francisco two weeks before the wedding and didn't have a new apartment yet. When you create a registry, there's a spot to put your shipping address, so we just put in one of my cousin's addresses close by. Otherwise, if you don't have an address yet and don't have friends/family in the area, most post offices will hold packages for you if you have them delivered to a PO Box. So, just get one in the area, and have your packages sent there.
  • You can add dates to the At Home card.  Or, use a friend or family member's address.  Or, proactively update your registry shipping address.  Or all three.

Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
  • We've already moved, but we are shipping stuff to my IL house, then we will return it, and rebuy it here. I know it's kinda jerk move, but the move was abrupt.
