After this past holiday weekend with family, I was (unfortunately) reminded that when my uncle drinks (which is at EVERY party) he gets belligerently drunk to the point of saying totally offensive things and just in general being out of line. Here is the issue: he and my aunt are throwing our rehearsal dinner. My FI's mom is unable to throw it herself, so she is hosting the cocktails beforehand and then my aunt and uncle are hosting the dinner so it's not like I can tell them what to do at their own party. There will be an open bar at the rehearsal AND at the wedding so there is no doubt in my mind that he will get drunk and offensive (this isn't even a question). What I guess I'm asking is, how do I avoid a cringe worthy drunken speech at either dinner? Even if I just straight up ask him, I don't think it will make any difference. How would you guys handle this?
