Do you need Save the Dates for a small wedding?

My FI and I are planning on a very small wedding with just our closest family and friends (probably around 25-30 people).  Do I still need to send out Save the Date Cards?  Would a phone call or email be sufficient?  We will send out formal invitations closer to the date.

Re: Do you need Save the Dates for a small wedding?

  • Phone call is fine. If your guest list is that small, chances are it's people you speak to on a regular basis and they will find out about the date, location, etc. just from speaking to you regularly anyway.
  • A phone call or email is fine for any size wedding. Nobody *needs* STDs, but if you want to be sure the important people are there, they need to be informed of the date ahead of time in some way.
  • I wouldn't bother with formal STD's. We had a small wedding, and let family know as soon as we set a date, roughly 3.5 months prior to the "festivities." It still gave my sister and her family plenty of time to get flight reservations from Europe.
  • We just sent everyone an email once we set the date.  Worked out fine.
  • STDs are never required, so you'd be fine doing that.

You definitely don't need to send out Save the Dates but you can if you want to.

  • Thanks, everyone.

NQB, I'll still be posting on NEY, but I felt this question was more appropriate for this board.  lol.

  • STD cards are really only necessary if you're getting married on a holiday weekend or very busy travel weekend.  You don't have to send them at all if you don't think it's necessary.  Wedding invitations go out 6-8 weeks before the wedding and that's plenty of time for local people to make plans.  If you know you have some people that will need to fly or get a hotel, just send them an e-mail or give them a call with the wedding date so they can go ahead and make their arrangements.
