how soon before or after the wedding did guests give your gifts?

I'm just wondering because I was stalking my registries and it looks like a number of gifts were purchased but I have not received any of them.  Our wedding is in approximately 45 days.

I'm not really concerned about it, but more curious since I know a lot of the gifts were purchased before my showers, but were not given to me as shower gifts.  Do you think guests are just waiting to hand-deliver or give them at the wedding?

Re: how soon before or after the wedding did guests give your gifts?

  • I have always, at every wedding I've attended, seen guests bring gifts to the reception.  Apparently, that's unheard of in other circles - gifts are always sent directly to the bride's or the couple's home.   My guess is that your guests will bring them to the reception (so clean your trunk out or borrow a bigger car ;-) ).
  • We started getting a fair amount of gifts about 6 weeks before the wedding and they stopped about a week afterwards.

We only got one boxed gift at the wedding.  Everything else was a card or delivered to our house.

  • I agree with OhWhyNot - The majority of gifts will be brought to your reception and placed on a designated gift table.  Take them home afterward and open them later.
  • I was under the impression that gifts are brought to the wedding. Any person that can't make it will mail you a gift.

very interesting.  I've been to 12 weddings and all but 1 there were no gifts brought to the wedding.  There were card boxes (which is all that we were planning on doing; we didn't rent a table for gifts).
  • Bringing gifts to the wedding is a regional thing.  I had never seen a single gift at at wedding, aside from a card box, until I went to some out-of-state weddings.  In some areas, a gift table with tons of boxed gifts is really common.

  • Hm. I've always brought gifts to the wedding. I guess it is a regional thing. I'm from LA originally so thats where I get it from. I wonder about VA.

  • We got the majority of our gifts at our wedding reception.  It's common in my area/circle to have a gift table and people bring gifts to the reception.  We only had a few sent to the house.

And yeah, some people do shop that far in advance.  It could be that when someone bought your shower gift, they also bought the wedding gift and are just holding onto it until the wedding day.

  • now that I think of it, I'm getting married in my hometown and have only been to 1 other wedding here, where I was a bridesmaid and not paying attention to those things.  Maybe that is how it's done in Cincinnati. . . hmmm. . .
  • My wedding is 3 months away and I've already received 4 of my 12 china sets... so it really depends on the area.  I'm having a tiny wedding but still having a table since most people bring boxes (or cards) to the wedding instead of shipping them in my state.

My MOH got married in Mason last year, and tons of people brought boxed gifts.  I think you should definitely have a table set aside for gifts.

  • I think pretty much anywhere in Ohio and you should have a table. I always ship gifts to the house ahead of time so the don't have to deal with it at the wedding/reception but I almost always see a lot of gifts at the wedding (gifts and cards)
  • Thanks Kentucky and Skippy!  I ALWAYS send the gift before hand as well, I mean who wants to lug around a big box to a wedding?  I guess a lot of people do!
