All right, show your colors...

I went to a super small private lutheran college, so while we don't have the HUGE following some other schools do, we showed spirit while we could.

We are the Concordia Cobbers, and these hats were rampant at games:

And the first week of college, all freshman must wear their beanie. Football players must wear them until the score the first touchdown of the season, but the neighboring state school have the initation of stealing our beanies, so you'll see some kids with them duct taped to their head. At the end of the first week, we do a beanie toss. I still have my beanie.

  • I don't have any school spirit. I spent the majority of my college years in the woods or on the beach smoking pot. We were the Seahawks. We didn't even have a football team, but I think our baseball team was okay. Our basketball team was good after I graduated.

If I had it to do over again, I would have gone to an ACC school. I'm kind of sad that I missed out on the school spirit stuff.
  • Oh Man, I'd have to dig for that. Most of my college years were before digital pictures. ;) But it was hot. Club 13 was where it's at!

  • And then there is THIS. The sacred cobber ring. You can only purchase them when you are a junior as a rite of passage into becoming a senior.

During graduation, there is a ring flipping ceremony as once you graduate, you get to flip it, indicating to all that you are, in fact, a Cobber grad.

  • I am still building up my awesome orange wardrobe, as I spent all of my college gamedays dressed either like this:

    or like this:

Boring, I know. But in all fairness, these uniforms took me to some pretty awesome places, like a WCBB championship ceremony, a presidential inauguration parade, and the St. Patrick's Day parade in Dublin, Ireland.

I now go to games like this:

but hope to achieve to this level of awesome:

    Michigan State University-- Spartans!

I think our greatest group of fans would be the Izzone.  The Izzone is the area closest to the court in a section behind our own bench where students sit.  The waiting list for the Izzone is a couple of years long.  It's named, obviously, after the best coach ever- Tom Izzo.  You have meetings and have to learn all the special cheers they have. They're... a little crazy:

Also, we have a statue on campus, nicknamed Sparty.  Every year, about 2 weeks before the U of M, MSU game, the marching band sets up a 24 hour "watch" to keep him from getting vandalized.  Bad, bad stuff has happened to Sparty in the past.

Yes, the people are out there all day, all night, rain, shine or snow.

We also have "The Rock" which is a giant stone right in the center of campus that gets painted multiple times throughout the year.  Most often, during pledge week.

Most notably, however, we like to riot.  Generally, this is connected to a loss in a game of some type.

  • I went to Missouri State as well, and I also hardly ever went to any games. There aren't a lot of traditions because our teams always sucked. Except for our handball team...they were national champs. Ha.

  • Opal, those are awesome!!

Brie! I forget you were Iowa!

  • We're not really active Iowa fans.  We actually kind of hate Iowa sports, because we were bitter law students that got mad that all the drunks took up our parking lot on weekends and we couldn't get to the library.

I like to root for Northwestern, but they're usually a lost cause.   Mizzou games are a ton of fun, though...we go to 2 or 3 every year.

Rioting or the other stuff? lol

I was in a "peaceful" riot after we won the national championship in '99.  It was really awesome and slightly scary.  I was at the Breslin Center, watching the game on the big screen TV.  The arena was packed (we were playing Florida) and there were fun things going on, like someone riding an inflatable gator down the steps. lol...

Anyway, towards the end of the game, the national guard came out and ringed the basketball court to keep us from running onto the floor.  Boy was that a tense moment. haha.  It was fine.  As soon as the game was over, we went outside to see that the campus was being circled by THREE helicopters, and there was this mass of movement towards Grand River, the main road at the north of campus.  So, walking up there, I discovered the entire campus walking on the road, cheering, giving people high fives-- even the cops! Impromptu parade.  it was a lot of fun, and there was no violence and not too much arresting.  That's my kind of riot!

  • Amoro, that was explained perfectly! :D
  • We also get a little riled up sometimes--sometimes peacefully and sometimes because the football coach gives a big middle finger to the school and runs for USC.

You got it.  He left because the school couldn't give him the million dollar pay out he wanted.

  • This was at the LSU/Florida football game in 2009. LSU lost, but it was the day FI proposed, so it was a great day anyway. This was like 15 minutes before he proposed, and sorry to any Florida fans for the crass circumcision joke.

  • And re: Nick Saban. LSU fans obviously feel pretty strongly about him. He's a hell of a coach, but IMO, he kind of hung LSU out to dry after their first national championship. He decided his breeches were too big for the NCAA and had to go to the NFL only to have a dismally sad season with Miami and then go to what is arguably one of LSU's biggest rivals: Alabama. Screw Nick Saban.

Yup.  He rebuilt our football team, only to leave them high and dry after we won the Orange Bowl.  Though, he was the person who recruited 4 rapists to the team so...

Yeah that's what every Alabama fan says: the only reason LSU won again in 2007 was because all of Saban's recruits were still there. But I think Les Miles has more to do with that than some people will admit. He's an awesome coach, and a really nice guy. I met him last year and he was perfectly polite.
