Name Change Question

Sorry, this isn't etiquette related, but there's a lot of married ladies on here and I thought you may be able to help.

Changing my name has been pretty straightforward but there was one thing I wasn't sure about. I have a prescription for birth control under my maiden name from planned parenthood since I was without insurance at the time. Now I am under my husbands insurance with my new last name. Do I need to get the name on my prescription changed to be able to run it through my insurance so the names match and if so, will the pharmacy do it for me if I show them my marriage license or will I have to go back to the original prescriber (which since its planned parenthood will be a pain in the ass) to get them to write me a new one in my new name?

I had a simliar problem.  I had my Dr. write me a script to take with me when we moved out of state.  I didn't realize until after that it was in my married name.  I brought it to the pharmacy here, explained the situation, and had a copy of my marriage license and ID, and they filled it with no problems.

ETA: I don't know what pharmacy you go to, but I filled mine at Rite Aid.

  • I filled my prescription at Target and had no problems. They didn't even think twice about it being my madien name.
  • That's a new one.  I didn't have that issue as I stopped taking BC about the same time that I changed my name at work (and thus, on my insurance).

I'd say just take copies of whatever you have (marriage license, passport in your old name, etc.) and it'll be fine.

  • I haven't had this exact issue, but my insurance name is different than my legal name (insurance company has it as Money Maiden-Married, which is incorrect as my maiden name is now a middle name).  I didn't have a single question about it.  To be safe, I'd either bring your marriage license or call ahead and see what they need you to do.
  • My prescription for BC is for a one year supply from my doctor.  Obviously the script was for my maiden name.  I got married in July and changed my name at work and everywhere else in July/August.  I never had an issue with my insurance rejecting payment because script was still in maiden name and my work/insurance info had changed to married name.

It probably just depends on your insurance, really.

  • I just told my pharmacy that I changed my name and showed them my new id.  They didn't ask for anything that used my last name and they did not ask for a new prescription to change the name.  I'm sure they'd have been more thorough if it were for pain killers or something - but I'm sure they figure nobody is trying to con the pharmacy out of birth control.

I go to walmart - I had also been going there for a while, so I'm sure they recognized me which could be why I didn't have to show them proof of my maiden name.
