Americans Elect 2012

I just read an article on CNN about Americans Elect 2012. Maybe I live under a rock, but I was wondering what E girls knew about it. I am pretty interested but don't know much.

Re: Americans Elect 2012

  • Tbh, I can't figure out how the fuuck it works. I get their newsletters and stuff, but the way they try to explain what they're doing is really convoluted and hard to follow. Or maybe I'm just too stupid.

  • Yeah, you are not stupid. I really want them to be this really cool thing but I am confused. I thought maybe all you smarty-pants would know!
  • I don't understand either. All I'm getting out of it is that they want money.

If I'm understanding this correctly, a President nominee and a VP nominee coul dbe from opposite parties and that Americans could choose each person individually based on their (the voter's) choice and not the party "package deal"?

I have a friend who is really into politics (she teaches American history) so I'll have to pick her brain on this.

I read a piece about them a few weeks ago. If I understand (and remember) right, they want money now to ensure they get their new "party" on all the ballots on all the states, since that's often what will keep a third party or indepedent candidate from being a viable candidate.

Not sure I remember this part right, but I think they're going to ensure that their presidential candidate is a different party from their VP candidate (or one or both have to be independents) so that it's more about the actual politics of those people, rather than a straight party line. And I believe they'll choose their candidates based on popular voting online.

The goal is to appeal to that huge middle ground that finds the republicans far too much to the right and the democrats essentially ineffective with moderates who don't have to answer to a party.

In theory, it's a great idea and I'm very interested in seeing how it plays out.

  • Thank you Mrs. B! This is all very interesting and I enjoy a political discussion. I want this to be as neat as it appears. I guess we'll see.
