Re: A travel poll

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why): Well...I loved my summer in Sweden because it was clean and really pretty, but the resort in Mexico we go to is probably my favorite place.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  I hate attractions and if I'm in a place where there IS an attraction? Chances are good I won't go see it.

    Worst place: Jamaica. Blach.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Bora Bora, Santorini, St. Lucia, and I really really want to go golfing in Scottland while drinking Scotch with the Mr.

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why):   We loved Park City.  So different from S.Fla (obvs.).  I haven't really been out of the country.. except for islands.  Antigua was pretty awesome.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  We don't usually do attractions.

Worst place: Miami? HA!  I'm not quite that far south, but S Fla in general is full of rude and nasty people.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:   Fiji, Italy, Greece, Turks and Caicos, Canada, Hong Kong, Africa.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  I don't do attractions either..but maybe the Great Wall of china

    Worst place: Thailand

Best place you've ever visited (and why):
Maui. Why? Because it's fuucking paradise, that's why.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:
I'm tempted to say Disney World. I just love it there. Other than that though, Versailles. Also Poulnabrone. And Molokini. Oh, and the entire city of Las Vegas.

    Worst place:
Hm, I'm sure there are places that I've just hated, but I can't think of them right now.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:
The entire world. No really. Top five though: Cambodia, Vietnam, Scotland, New Zealand and South Africa.

I've been to a ton of places and I can't think of just one that is my favorite.

I love China, South Africa, Hawaii, Indonesia, Thailand and Spain (to name a few) all the same but for very different reasons.

Worst place was Siapan.  The island was nice and interesting, but the resort we stay at sucked.

Dream List:  too many to list, I love to travel.  But if I had to pick I would say Australia and Egypt would be up there.

Attractions:   The Great Wall was pretty damm cool.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Best place you've ever visited (and why): London. I basically got a free trip and lodging because my ex-bf had family just outside the city that we stayed with and my parents bought my plane ticket (graduation gift), so I just got to hang out and explore all of London for 3 1/2 weeks for free (except spending money). And we went to Paris for 3 days. It was so awesome.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Tower of London. We had the best guide/beefeater, he was hilarious. And I love history so it was just all around really interesting. And of course we got to see the Crown Jewels.

Worst place: St. Thomas. But only because it was godawful hot and humid and I was staying with my parents in a remote villa for my sister's DW wedding. And my friend who was supposed to come couldn't make it because all the computers for the airline she was flying went down the day before her flight and she got stranded in Chicago. It was a long week.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Italy (Venice, Florence, Rome, Positano), Holland, San Francisco, Alaska, St. Lucia.

  • OH! WORST PLACE! Got it: I take back what I said about the entire city of Las Vegas because I HATE Fremont Street. Yes I do.
  • Best place you've ever visited (and why):  Ecuador. it was amazing, aside from the little kid pick-pockets. The food was incredible, the rainforest was beautiful. I didn't want to leave.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  I can't think of any I've been to except for Disney, which I love. I'm not big on attractions.

Worst place: The Bahamas. Never go there with long hair if you don't like to be touched. The women will grab your hair as you walk by, and it really pisses me off.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Greece and Italy to see the ruins. Also Ireland.

</div><div>We've been to Minneapolis twice and hated it both times.  Second time was for FI's frat formal, and we know there's a wedding there next summer.  The Mall of America is the worst.  We also went to school with a ton of students from there that thought it was the best place ever. </div><div>
    </div><div>Best place I've been - D.C.  I'm a history nerd, so it's right up my alley.</div><div>
</div><div>Favorite attraction - Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.  There's something almost enlightening about seeing a lot of that stuff.  I love Freddie Mercury, so to see something he wore up close was just surreal to me.  </div><div>
    </div><div>Worst - answered.</div><div>
</div><div>Where I want to go:  all over!  I haven't seen much of the NE.  I haven't been to Europe.  I haven't been on a cruise.  I love pop culture so I want to see a lot of Hollywood attractions.  I also love nature so there's a lot of national parks I want to visit.</div><div>

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why):  Coast of Maine.  It was my first trip with H (he wasn't even FI yet) and just so peaceful and relaxing.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Foam Henge.

Worst place:  Pigeon Forge, TN.  Waaaaaay too many people and weird tourist things.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Tahiti, Greece, & Australia, just to name a few.

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why): Florence.  It's just... powerful and majestic.  Not in a way that smacks you over the head with opulence, but it's in the air.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to: I guess that would be the Colosseum and Palatine Hill?

Worst place:Venice.  It's just so sad to me.  It's overrun by tourists.  The flavor that would make it different (people living there) just barely exists.  You can't find a spot that's off the beaten path.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Iceland, Maldives, Jordan, New Zealand, Russia
  • Ohhh, Russia. Put Russia on my list of places I want to go, too. Oh and Sweden. Of course. :-)

Best place you've ever visited (and why):  I am the worst person to answer this question because I really haven't been anywhere.  I live in Maryland and have visited NYC, DC, and Orlando for family trips but have no travel experience.  I plan for this to change drastically once I'm married and living with FI.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Disney World I'd say.  It was a really special family vacation for me since it was really the first time we did something different from our usual Maryland beach vacation.

Worst place:  I don't have any bad travel experiences either, since I'm lacking travel experience in general.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  SO many places!  Germany, Italy, Japan, Hawaii or some other tropical islands....  Just somewhere.

  • Uhm, Minneapolis is an awesome city. I hate the mall of america, too, but the Walker Art Museum? The Guthrie? The Orpheum? Target Field? All the good restaurants downtown? Minnehaha Park? Calhoun? Uptown?

Minneapolis is fucking awesome. You did it wrong, I'm afraid.

  • Fezz I completely agree about Miami/S Fla in general.

But the rest of Florida is grand. You northerners should come some time!!

  • And, PS, The MOA is in Bloomington, NOT Minneapolis. So there's that.

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why): Well, going to Italy this summer was pretty darn awesome, because it's Italy, and because I saw all sorts of fantastic things. Stateside, I'd say San Francisco, for the food, the wine, and the beauty.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to: Michelangelo's David. Does that count as an "attraction"?

Worst place: I stayed in a horrible hotel once in Memphis where a guy tried to kill himself while we were there. I also didn't like Florence as much as I thought I would, except for the art.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Ireland, France, Germany, Ghana, Morocco, India and the 20 or so states in the US where I haven't been.

  • this is true. the COASTS of Florida with the exception of SOUTH Florida, with the exception of the Keys being awesome and not technically part of S. Fla, then that is where you should go. got it? And I like Disney but that's the only thing not on the coast that's worth the drive.

<div>Point and case.  All people from Minneapolis think it's awesome and most people that visit think it's meh.  We saw a ton of stuff and were bored to tears.  It's just not for everyone.  </div>

Best place you've ever visited (and why):  Japan. It was amazing! It was like visiting a whole new world, the culture, food, fashion, everything is so different

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Arlington. It was the most moving place to see.

Worst place: Apple River, Wisconsin. Never again.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Ireland, Egypt, and Australia

ETA: Not that Arlington is an "attraction" per se. Just a very significant monment for our country.

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why): Just one?  I loved New York City, just because it was so different from where I live-everyone was so go, go, go. Colorado was amazing as well-the scenery was gorgeous, and the place my family vacations in Florida is great-very small town, and very quiet, clean beaches.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to: Does the ocean count? Because it was definitely my number 1 thus far.

Worst place: Newark, New Jersey. Yikes. I was there on a church mission trip, and was more than happy to leave.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Santorini, Greece, Tuscany, the rest of the 50 states that I haven't been to, Australia, New Zealand....there are a lot

You should just get in the car and drive. It's amazing how many cool places you can visit if you do that. I've seen a good deal of the United States doing that.

Also, I'm with Fishy in defending Minneapolis. I was only there for an overnight this fall, but from what I've seen, that place rocks and I can't wait to go back.

    What did you do there?

And I do believe the idiom is case and point.

When I think of Minneapolis, I think of our incredibly swanky but inexpensive hotel, the fantastic dinner we had across the street, the fabulous and very different architecture that we encountered as we drove across town to my conference, and the second delicious meal we had after the conference was over. Of course, Minneapolis isn't as big of a city as Chicago or New York, but few cities are. But it has its own deep history, and that is clearly evident.

I love being out here because it's giving me a chance to tour lots of Midwestern cities that are completely new to me. :)

I wouldn't care if someone hated one of my favorite places either.  But I kind of anticipated someone would get defensive when I said I hate Minneapolis....
