Stupid Excel question...

Let's say I want my Excel spreadsheet to count how many times the word "Chicken" appears in the column for meal choice... what function will do that? I'm playing with them and can't find one. :)

Re: Stupid Excel question...

  • =COUNTIF
    or
    =COUNTIFS

OR, you can filter for the work chicken in that column and see the count at the bottom of the page

  • If you do a data filter.  You can choose "chicken" and then it will only show those who chose chicken.  At the bottom of the screen, it will tell you what the total is.

    =COUNTIF(B1:B120,"chicken")

Sub out the range with the real range.

You can also sort and do a subtotal (using count).  That will count each change in meal choice so you can see how many beef, chicken and veg you have.
