At the absolute earliest, you should send them a year ahead (if many guests need to make travel arrangements.) The general rule, though, is 6-8 months prior to the wedding date. You have plenty of time.

More than a year, and you run the risk of confusing your guests. (wait, do they mean this October or next October?) and between 9-12 months, honestly, unless it's a foreign DW, means people might lose them. (I sent mine at 7 months and still had people calling and emailing me to get the hotel block information, so clearly they lost them.) If it's local to you and/or most of your guests, 6-9 months is a good time frame.
