When should I send out our save the dates?

My FI and I are getting married October 2012 (OOT wedding). When is it appropriate to mail out our save the dates? Thanks everyone!

  • At the absolute earliest, you should send them a year ahead (if many guests need to make travel arrangements.) The general rule, though, is 6-8 months prior to the wedding date. You have plenty of time.

  • I'm behind schedule.  My wedding is in about five and a half months and my STD's are still sitting in the trunk of my car.  :(

  • Anytime between Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day 2012 would be appropriate.
  • More than a year, and you run the risk of confusing your guests. (wait, do they mean this October or next October?) and between 9-12 months, honestly, unless it's a foreign DW, means people might lose them. (I sent mine at 7 months and still had people calling and emailing me to get the hotel block information, so clearly they lost them.) If it's local to you and/or most of your guests, 6-9 months is a good time frame.

  • I'm planning on 9 months ahead of time.  My wedding planner told me 9 months to 1 year.
