Is NOT sending out Save the Dates a big faux-pas? We were engaged in May 2010, and getting married in November 2010. We feel like the invites will be going out so soon, that it doesn't make sense to waste time and energy on both.

This exactly! I had never heard of them before coming on TK.
The only reason I'm sending them is because our wedding is on a holiday weekend and I want to give people a heads up. Also, regardless of the date, I am seding them to our out-of-state guests so they know in about a year they will have to make travel arrangements.
Actually, not everyone is getting one! Only people I don't talk to on a daily basis.
Amber, with your timeline you're fine without them. They're, as Amoro said, a new thing for brides to spend money on; not without their usefulness for mid-week/holiday-time/farther-off weddings, but not a necessity. Good luck with planning!

sometimes, it is helpful if the wedding is on a weekday, a holiday weekend, a destination wedding, etc just to give the guests a heads up.
i would say you are fine without them
