So what do you think of

a judge who fees a man accused of raping a child on 10, 000 bond and then the accused rapes a six year old when released?

I don't believe people like this can be rehabilitated and this makes me question my position on the death pen.

  • Ugh, I think the judge should be removed for letting the loser out in the first place.

  • Well, that's where registration and the conditions surrounding registration and release is supposed to help with that. It's not nearly close to 100 percent foolproof, but it is meant to give a level of accountability and prevent future crimes from happening. Does it work all the time? No. But it makes them easier to catch and put back in jail.

Whether I agree with it or not is neither here nor there. But it's what we have to work with.

  • Well Myran, that all depends on your definition of fair.  Not that I'm saying it would be unfair for him to be imprisoned forever, after he is given one chance--but "fair" is one of those words that is different to everyone, and unfortunately, in this case, a lot of people have to agree.
  • That brings up the question of sexual offender registration, which I will leave for another day ;P

  • Let me tell you from experience, getting out of prison is no picnic for a sex offender, especially if they are on parole or supervised release.  I've had offenders request to go back to prison, saying it was easier than supervised release.  There are so many safeguards and conditions in place when one gets out of prison (varying from state to state, of course), that it's not like they just get out and go back to offending against people.
  • Ha! Why not today?

Aw, talking about registration and notification makes me sad for my lost thesis that will never be written.  At least, not by me.
  • Well I was thinking it would be a good topic for the day crowd. It is a new topic isn't it?

  • With regards to child sex offenders, my definition of "fair" is far from constitutional and therefore I should never work anywhere near this population.  At least I know my limits and I leave it up to you guys to deal with.  But now it is late and bedtime for me!

  • Sounds good, Ricks. I'm heading to bed anyway.

I love civilized intelligent discussion. Thanks, ladies.

  • Today has been very debate-full.  I like it.  I like that I can disagree and we can talk about it and no one gets butthurt.  At least, not that I know of.

Have any of you ladies ever heard of the Bar Jonah case? I know it b/c it affected my state.
He was a sexual offender from the East coast. He was in a mental instituation and they knew he was NOT rehabilitated at all. The state let him out on the condition that he move in with his mom in MT. He did. Then he kidnapped a boy, murdered him, and cannibalized him. He literally fed the boy (unknowingly of course) to his church. He had detailed this desire in journals he kept while in the mental institution.
