NWR: New Pet

So we discovered an abandoned fawn!  Her name is Bella and she's thankfully thriving on goat's milk.  She's about a week and half old and is just one of the cutest things I've ever seen.  Between her, my three dogs, school and wedding planning I'm going a little bonkers!  Thought I'd share some pictures!

  • Oh my...what a sweet little baby. What will you end up doing with her once she's older?

We found her on my parent's land.  They have about 40 acres where there is a huge herd of deer that just got spoiled being fed and protected from hunters.  When she's an adult we'll see if she'll figure out how to go with the herd or we'll create a pasture for her.  Either way she'll be fed and looked after.
  • Do you have a local fish and game? They would probably be better equipped to take care of her. It is very sweet of you guys to take her in, but can you legally keep her as a pet where you live?
This happened at my Grandma's farm once, the mother was shot by a hunter. Fish and game raised the baby and I believe reintroduced her later on.

She'll be reintroduced later on.  Also, this is the second fawn we've raised (last one was brought to us by the vet).  Local fish and game would rather have us raising her and having her live on our land.

That's awesome! I think it will be great to be there while she grows up and to see her (hopefully) get reintroduced to a herd. Even if she doesn't do that, her very own pasture will be a pretty sweet deal just the same. :)

She gets a bottle every 2-3 hours.  So I do get up frequently throughout the night with her.  The nice thing is that my dogs actually sleep around her so she isn't lonely.  Animals are simply amazing.
  • This is amazing!  Can we get a pic of the dogs and fawn sleeping together?  This is so sweet of you--what a cute little fawn!
  • Want! Add that to my list of babies I want: elephant, otter, deer, human, dolphin, possum.

I'll try hard to get the photo! My dogs like to pose for the camera and disrupt Bella (she's still skittish) but I'll see what I can do.

We have a habit of taking in baby animals.  Last year was another fawn Bambi (I know such an original name) and a robin named Breeze.  We have the space, resources (I breed mini dachshunds so I have a nursery set up and all of the supplies) and usually the time so I don't mind.

I so want a calf, baby fox, baby skunk (this may actually happen sometime soon as long as I have the time to properly research skunk litter box training), elephant, and killer whale.

Sometime I'd like to squeeze in having some human babies.

I'm up again and she just spit up goat's milk all over me and in my hair.  It's times like this I'm almost willing to share her.  Then she gets adorable and I want to squeeze her to pieces.
  • how do you know she was abandoned?

Typically you don't touch a fawn that's been left alone in the grass because after giving birth a doe will get up and deliver the placenta as far from the fawn as possible (to avoid attracting predators).  With Bella we checked in for five hours to see if the mom returned (which is much much longer than a mother would leave a new fawn).  Also, there was no sign of the mother having bedded down near Bella and she had the beginnings of fly larvae growing in her coat (what happens when newborns aren't groomed by their moms).  She also was exceedingly weak from not being fed.
