Er. I really hate people. It is called a forever home, not a place you can stay until you have issues. I would do anything for my pets. This is why I rescue b/c there are to many irresponsible pet owners. Yes I would love to get a cute little puppy, but I will always take the sad abandoned adult because they need love too.

She was tiny when we first got her, got KU with 2 litters of kittens and then blew up when we had her fixed.

Wow, she sounds like a responsible pet owner. *sarcasm font*

Jasmine, my mom's dog has seizures, too. She's on medication, but she still has them sometimes, so they are working on it. My mom found the dog as a stray and will keep her forever. She's totally sweet. No one in my family has ever surrendered a pet. We used to joke that we take pets other people don't want.

  • Humm...Not trying to get flamed here, but....She mentioned that they are moving in with their IL's that won't let her take them  and that she has found temp homes for the others? So I am not sure what I would do? Prob live on the street cause I love my puppies to much...

  • Mery, my girls are rescues as well. Shy is supposedly a purebred Aussie. So, we assue they gave her up b/c of the epilepsy. We would have adopted her anyway, but it would have been good to know. She should have been on meds from the day we got her.

  • I could never in a zillion years give away my cat. I love her with my whole loving place. I don't know if I'll even be able to get another cat when she's eventually gone.
  • stinkerbell, I would assume that the temp. homes for the other cats aren't taking this one because of his or her issues.  Who's going to volunteer to cat-sit a cat that pees on random crap and can't clean itself?

  • What a selfish biitch.  I can't even imagine this.  There are VERY FEW reasons to get rid of a pet.  Actually, the only one I can think of is the reason my parents got rid of their dog when I was born, and that was that he was trying to kill me.  But, they found him a good home, didn't just give him a to a shelter.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: cat or kid? : Haha, same here. We decided that we're going to quarantine the baby in one room so the cat can freely roam around the house.

This, in my opinion, is a very reasonable solution!

Seriously though, I really think my life has been as great as it has because I grew up with pets from day 1---and because I love them.

Good point and prob why the IL's don't want her to bring them, cause they know she has not properly trained them.

  • Mery, we are doing homemade dogfood with Shy. We also give her a dose of liquid melatonin before bed, which helps a lot. Has your mom done a blood panel with the dog? A lot of seizures are caused by low blood sugar, so Shy also gets ice cream when she starts to act funny.

Ditto this! And I've heard that infants who are around pets are less likely to develop allergies.

Oh, and my current cat (Nimbus) I adopted when he was 7. I later found out that he has a recurrent eye problem (like 2 years later) which requires not-so-cheap visits to the ophthalmologist and daily medication. I'm glad his last mommy waited for someone to come adopt him rather than putting him in a shelter and that the person who did it was me. It's tedious to take care of, but I do it because I love him.

I also wonder at the reason for the IL's ultimatum. No way would my parents ever make me give up a pet. Allergies? That might be the only genuine concern, but then a lot of allergies can be controlled and/or the cats can be confined.

  • I went and read both threads (well, as much as I could get through without shooting flames out of my eyes)--and am furious, not just at this random women---but at all people who get and get rid of pets so easily.

A pet is a responsibility---just like a child is. Would this woman get rid of her child if it turned out to be overweight, pee'd on random things, and failed to clean itself properly?! I highly doubt it. What an idiot.

  • I'm afraid to click over.  I am getting all teary eyed just here.  I love my cats so much.  They have been with me through so much.  All they ask for is food, clean litter, a good scratching and an occasional enema.  I even kiss them goodbye.

I have said it before and I'll say it again.  I hate people; they suck.

I *think* she's had blood panel. She's on something right now (phenobarbitol? Sp?) and they've had to increase her dosage twice, so they are going to try something else soon, too. I know my mom really likes the vet she's at now. I live in a different state so I've only met the dog twice. My mom's had her for about 18 months. She's a beagle and she's the most gentle, sweet beagle we've ever had (out of 4 my parents have owned).

  • She's overweight, can't clean herself and occasionally pees on clothes left on the floor.

Then pick your clothes up off the floor you lazy slob!

First of all...the peeing is the third occasional reason listed.  She seems to be most concerned that the cat is overweight.  Oh the irony.

Second...the cat blew up after getting KU TWICE????  That dirty whore.  Maybe,  just MAYBE, she could have gotten her cat fixed like a responsible pet owner.  People who let their animals breed are disgustingly selfish and have no regard for their pets safety, health, and the lives of the kittens.

And the whole, "I've totally tried everything!" No. She got to a point where she didn't want to waste the time and energy, or she didn't want to spend more money. You know what? Then don't have 3 cats.

She's also too much of a pussy (pun intended) to have the cat put down herself, which posters are telling her is her other option. She'd rather be a coward and lie to herself that the cat finds a good home.

  • Phenobarb is pretty standard, but will eventualy destory the liver. We just started Shy on potassium bromide as well, rather than upping the phenobarb. Beagle's aren't prone to seizures. Poor puppy!
    image
  • Yes! Potassium bromide is what they're trying next. They started her off on phenobarb at first on a lower dose because of the liver issue. But the vet said they can wean her off the phenobarb and just use the potassium bromide.

She's the only dog we've had with seizures. :-( Beagles are generally pretty healthy for purebreds.

  • that thread just pissed me off. freaking selfish bitch. both our cats were rescues and we would never give them up. our place is pretty much known as the zoo, and people always call me when they can't keep a pet because they know that i will never say no. i will take an animal from someone and give it a home before i let it go to a shelter, i have before and i'm sure i will again.

we also refused to move somewhere that would not allow our pets to come with us. it was not an option. pets, no matter what they are (cat/dog/snake/whatever) are your responsibility for their entire lives, not just when you can or it's easy.

i HATE people like her and the other "it's just a cat" idiots over there.

Yeah, this is how I ended up "long term cat sitting" for two different friends on two different occassions. I would do it again, too.

  • I'm afraid reading these threads will serve no purpose other than distress me at the level of selfishness that can be exhibited by my fellow humans.
