What is this country coming to?

I think it's kind of lame when stadiums or concert venues get their names changed to sponsors names, but this takes the cake.

http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jun/10/101119/venue-gets-new-name-1-800-ask-gary-amphitheatre/entertainment/

1-800-ask-gary?!  Come on!

I also heard on the radio this morning that ashleymadison.com has a $25 million bid in to get naming rights for some stadium.  That's the website where married people go to find someone to cheat on their spouse with.

[QUOTE]That is lame! Our local venue got changed to "Verizon Wireless Music Center" years ago and most people I know still refer to it by the original name.  (Deer Creek).

I'm in Indiana too and yep, I still call it Deer Creek.

Did you hear all the hoopla about the Murat in Indy?  It's been the Murat Center since 1909 and Old National Bank just contracted with Live Nation and changed the name of the building.  It's a very big deal.

  • Ugh, I hate all of the name changes.  Everyone was totally against changing Mile High Stadium to Invesco Field, and they were like "We'll still call it Mile High!"  Uh, yeah, everyone calls it Invesco Field now.  :/

What?? No more Murat? Sad. I wasn't thrilled with the Dome becoming Lucas Oil. It's like the Hoosier identity was lost when they tore down/blew up the dome.
  • I can't see saying, "I'm going to the 1-800-ask-gary"  No.  That's wrong.  I mean, I'm somewhat ok with the Coliseum here now being called Rexall Place, because "I'm going to Rexall" isn't that much of a mouthful.

  • Exactly Moose!

Maratea, they're fighting to keep the Murat name and it's still on the building but they put up a new sign that says Old National Center or something like that.

  • I actually got bummed out in a totally juvenile fashion when the First Union arena near my home town changed to the Wachovia Arena. Because now you can't call it the F U Arena.

Also, it was INSANELY lame when the football statium where I went to college, Byrd Stadium, obviously named after someone important to University of Maryland sports that I wasn't acually bothered enough to know about, was changed to something like the Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium or something. It's a college! For the love of pete! And I just went to look it up, and apparently it's changed AGAIN to the Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Really? Lame.

  • HUGE pet peeve of mine. I think it's a perfect example of how completely tacky America is these days.

A local venue recently changed its name to Comfort Dental Amphitheater. That is so dumb, I seriously am boycotting and refuse to see any shows there. I feel sorry for any artists who have to stand on the stage and say, "Thanks for having me here at Comfort Dental Amphitheater." Gah! It's ridiculous! It used to be called Fiddler's Green which is about 800% better.

We've also got The Pepsi Center (not so bad) and Coors Field. I don't mind Coors Field since the Coors family are from Colorado and it's a bit of a historical name here. It doesn't reek of corporate advertising buyout the way the others do.

I swear to god, if they rename Red Rocks to something corporate I will just start crying.
  • Aww! The Murat used to be my backyard! I saw Pete Yorn there. And The Lion King.

  • We have a concert venue around here that still is called it's previous name because no one can remember the new name.  I think the new name is like Grand Prairie theater, but everyone always follows it up with, "the former Nokia Theater."  It's been around 3 years since the name changed, and I'm sure Nokia appreciates all of the free publicity.

  • HOLY CRAP I know that place! That will not catch on.

The Tampa Bay Lightning play at what is now called "The St Pete Times Forum"  well the competitor paper (tbo.com which you linked to Dani) will refer to it as "The Forum"
and before that it was The Ice Palace and before that it was The Thunderdome.

Where the Tampa Bay Bucs play is called Raymond James Stadium, which is mostly referred to as RJS or RayJay. Before that it was Houlihan's which was apparently a crappy restaurant.

Why is it always Florida?! huh, huh!?

  • Val, when I first moved to Tampa, it was still the Ice Palace.  I remember when they changed it.

Fische, I've seen Rusted Root and Brandi Carlisle there!  Not together though. :)

  • i refuse to call venues by their corporate names. like, deer creek is deer creek. great woods is great woods. the knick is the knick.
  • Huh. The main venue here in DC is the Verizon center, which I know used to be called something else and now I can't remember what it is.... Weird.
  • The old hockey stadium in Buffalo was War Memorial Auditorium and the old football field was War Memorial Stadium. Confusing, huh? Everyone just called the the Aud and the Rockpile.

We had an FU center in Philly too....where the Sixers play.  Then Wachovia took it over.

<div>That's the one! Thanks daff, it would  have bugged me all day (and I would have been too lazy to look it up.) Speaking of sound, have you ever been to the DAR? HORRIBLE sound. Awful. Ruined my first Eddie Izzard show. </div>

    HA! That's ridiculous.

Our football stadium has the same name as my bank. Which is ok with me because that means I get to take out money with no surcharges from the ATMs in there.

Our baseball team sucks so much that no one cares to sponsor them.

  • Oye. Around here it never takes. They changed the name of the Skydome a couple of years ago. The motherfucking Skydome! To "Rogers Centre". Nobody went along with it so now they try to call it the "Rogers Skydome". Nobody calls it that, it's the Skydome. I'll always be that, not catching on at all.

  • so far i've managed to avoid dar.
  • This is slightly OT, but I thought about it after reading through these.  So Dallas is hosting the Super Bowl next year and we've seen a lot of stuff that will be changing names just for all this Super Blow crap.

For instance, Tom Landry Highway (which back in the day was just 1-30, but they had to re-name that and screw it all up for no good reason) will be known as Tom Landry Super Bowl Highway during Super Bowl week.

So if anyone asks me if I know how to get to Tom Landry Super Bowl Highway, I will apologize and say that I only know where Tom Landry Highway is.  Undecided

I'm driving down to Noblesville for the DMB concert on the 20th--I've been planning my trip online and I noticed that half the websites I've seen still say things like "close proximity to Deer Creek."

  • I thought the Superbowl was in Florida early this year (2010)....

Also the 2011 Superbowl will be played in Cowboy Stadium, Tx...
