Should you tip your seamstress??

I'm getting my alterations done at the giant bridal store where I purchased my gown - the seamstress in charge of my dress is very sweet, but I don't know if it's considered appropriate or not to tip her....???  Help!

Re: Should you tip your seamstress??

  • My seamstress was self-employed and it is not customary to tip a business owner.  Your seamstress is not self-employed and you seem to be pleased with the service she is providing so I think it makes sense to tip her.

  • I hope not. I have no intention of doing so.

Then again my biatch wrote the name of my final fitting down wrong, and I did all the prep work to go in and try on my dress/ pick it up... and they were like oops it's not ready. So I figure they owe me about 3 hours and a half a tank a gas.
  • I am a seamstress and I never expect to be tipped. I charge based upon how long the sewing took. Anything above that price that the client may choose to pay is wonderful, but I would never expect it from anyone. Save your money for another part of your wedding unless you really want to tip her. She won't think any less of you.

And Calumet, if their mistake really did cost you that much time and gas, I would ask for some compensation. I would feel awful if I caused that much trouble for a client and would most definitely offer a small discount.
  • Thanks everyone!  She is very sweet (and I'm sure will do a very nice job), but the salon is charging me out the wazoo for the alterations, so I guess I probably won't tip unless some other part of the wedding magically drops in price, LOL.

    Much appreciated!
