Paying to see sample of centerpiece/bouquets?

Has anyone paid for such a thing? My sister had a huge wedding here in NY and she never had to. The florist is asking 60% of the price of the centerpiece and bouquet....EXCUSE ME? My friend owns an event planning business in NY and they create centerpieces for various business, fashion shows, weddings etc and she states they never charge for such a thing. That's part of the service! Our wedding is in PuntaaCana, but that's alot to charge to see a sample.

that sounds odd - have not heard of that before.

It does sound strange.  But some florists won't make a sample until you actually book them.  Are you doing something really strange?  You could also ask them if you can drop by the shop as they are preparing for a wedding, so they're not making something specifically for you.

I was able to see samples before booking my florist...it seems odd that they would want you to pay for them.

Things are different at other destinations, things in DR are not the same as NY. And usually you are kind of stuck with the vendors that the hotels use. This is not surprising to me at all.

60%? Really? Why didn't they just have a portfolio or sketches of their work like any other normal vendor?
