AW for a moment: We were robbed

I came home yesterday and my front door and back slider door was open.  They took my laptop, my iPod and a little portable DVD player.  They took a few nice baseball cards from my FI and looked for pills.  They touched my bed because they took my pillowcase to put the loot in.  I feel totally violated and angry.

  • OMG.  I'm so sorry.

This happened a few years ago to me and my roommates.  It's not so much the missing stuff as the feeling of violation.  *HUGS*

I am so sorry that this happened to you.

  • Eww. Did you leave it unlocked or did they force their way in?

  • Oh no!  That is terrible, I'm sorry.  I can't imagine that feeling.

  • No, we're very vigiliant about locking doors.  They used a crow bar to break the back door handle.

The worst part was they let my entirely indoor cat outside.  I was freaking out because I thought she ran away (much worse than the few things they took), but she was on the porch waiting for us to come home.  Thank God.

  • That seriously sucks!  I couldn't imagine the uneasy feeling that would linger knowing someone was going through your things.  :(
  • Oh man, I'm so sorry!  I can only imagine how upset you must be, did they leave any evidence behind as to who did it?

  • Thanks guys!  :)

They took fingerprints and stuff, but I doubt that's going to come up with much.  We had the serial number of the computer and stuff so that's going into their database.  I guess if they pawn it will be pinged or something.  My friend got her computer back when that happened.

I get migraines all the time and it triggered a migraine and I had to stay home.  Which is great because i've been staying home a lot because of the stupid things.  I need a break!

If something had happened to my cat, I would have had their guts for garters.

  • That really sucks Meg... will you be okay to stay there? I know that some people that feel really violated upon being robbed aren't able to stay in their home.. I hope that you are still okay that you don't have to worry about that. :-( Feel betterrr!

  • Yeah, we thought about going to my sister's place, but we didn't.  I had a bad night the other night, but it will get better.  I'm hoping they realized we didn't have oxycontin (which they were apparently looking for) and won't be back.  We have an alarm system, we just don't have it activated (mostly because it's freaking expensive).  My FI has homeowner's policy for his house we're currently renting out.  So, we'll be covered.  I just am a little afraid to come home and have the same thing happen again.

So glad you kitty is safe and I get the violated feeling I had my car stolen and it does suck.  Hard to explain for someone that was never robbed...

And you all are safe and unharmed.

  • Ug... being robbed is one of the most horrible feelings in the world.  It makes me so sad to hear it and I'm sorry.  It's disturbing what some people are willing to do to find their next fix.  Glad to hear about the cat though and your perspective on it is great.

  • I'm so glad your cat was okay! And I am glad that they weren't there when you got home. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident. Good luck to you!

  • That royally sucks.  I'm glad you and kitty are okay though.  I hope you get your stuff back and they find who did it.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you.I know how scary it can be.

two years ago I was home alone, and someone tried to break into the house while I was in it.I was petrified, and grabbed the biggest knife I had and hid.I was very lucky that in those few seconds my English Bulldog (only a year old at the time) started going absolutely crazy and throwing himself up against the door growling, barking, and foaming at the mouth. In a few seconds after that, the person stopped and I heard them running. I have never seen my dog act like that since, not even close.

Sorry,I went off track there.I do suggest that if you don't feel right after a few weeks,or if you feel scared to go see somebody about it.I'm a completely rational and calm person, but after that I became paranoid to be home at night by myself, and going to therapy helped me out a lot and I don't even go anymore nor am I scared to be at home alone.

I hope you get your things back and I'm glad you and your kitty are ok.

  • Yuck, what a horrible feeling to have your home violated.  Sorry, but at least you and your FI and your cat are okay.
  • I totally understand how you feel.  Fortunately only stuff is missing; your kitty is safe.  I am working now on training my cat to be my ring bearer.  He is a gorgeous black and white Maine coon mix.  Since he is already wearing a tuxedo, he seemed like the perfect candidate and with a small saucer of treats, he'll follow anyone anywhere.

Again, my sympathy for what you are going through and happy the kitty is fine.
  • Thanks again, guys!  I just got back from closing my checking and saving accounts and reopening everything.  Maybe now I will keep my balance straight.  One can hope.  Anyway, I really appreciate the sentiments.  :)

  • Megs I'm so, so sorry. :( That is really scary. I understand the violated feeling as I felt the same when my car was broken into a few years ago, but I imagine it's 10x worse when it's your house. Big hugs.

I'm really sorry.  I've been there.  It is a terrible feeling.  I will say that the fear does ease with time.  Is it possible to get the security system activated or a stronger door?
