I am just curious. What was your starting pay after grad school? I know this will have a huge range and every profession is different. I know I will probably get a low salary,  because, well that is what happens to people who get social work degrees.

So that third option should say 50-60

As soon as I got my graduate degree I got a new job making $10k more a year than I was making at that time.

KK, until you work your way up in licenses, you're gonna get some crap pay, but it does get better, I promise.

I'm in criminal justice.  I was a consumer services investigator when I was in grad school, and then I graduated and got a job investigating investment/securities fraud.

I have an undergrad in psychology. I always thought social work type jobs tend to pay really low right?

Dani, it depends on the arena you decide to go into.

And without having a billable license, the pay is really, really going to suck for awhile. It's one of those fields where you really have to do your time in the trenches before you start making any money.

They do pay low, unless you go into private practice or become famous with some new theory. With just my b.s degree starting pay would be probably 27-30.

With just my B.A. back in 1999, my starting salary was in that range too kk.  I just worked my way up through different jobs to get where I am now and my career path has changed a bit too.

I still don't HAVE my first job after grad school, unless you count subbing (in which case my "salary" is lower than any of your options) but if I ever DO get a teaching job it will be approximately $30-$40 K.

I went to law school - my starting salary was equal to the amount of debt I racked up during the 3 years.

Well, no. Not outpatient. Unless your state is different with that license, you could only work in a place that provides a service in a bundled rate, so you wouldn't have to independently bill.

In ND, that would mean basically PRTF's, or some hospitals.

You can't bill independent or third party billing until you get your...whatever it is in that state. For me, it's an LICSW.

I think in Maine you can bill as a lmsw. On job ads it will say "18 per billable hour" or something like that, and they accept lmsw, lcsw, licsw, lcpc, etc

kk the pay you posted is pretty standard for those that are not yet licensed out here. Folks in similar positions that are licensed get at least $50,000.

I'm getting an MBA. Starting salaries are around the $80k mark.

A classmate of mine graduated and her starting salary was $40k more than what she was making before, plus annual bonuses. She makes well into the 6 figure range now.

I can't wait until I get my degree. No guarentee I'll make that, but I'm sure I'll make about double what I make now, since I get paid crap (but the benefits rock!).

I should add that the pay definitely goes up when you can provide supervision to interns - MFTi and ACSW. At least that is how it works in CA...

Yes! And out here LCSW is tougher than being an MFT (I don't know if that is true where you are) so they can make more in larger corporations.

Katie, your LCSW, must be our LICSW? I'm guessing so.

ND won't even hire MFT's and most LPCC's can't find a whole lot of jobs either because of the billing.

I feel bad for people who go to school for so many years and go into debt up to your eyeballs and when you finally get a job, you don't make a lot.  I know people say that they don't do the job they do for the money, but it still have to be able to make a living.

I started going to college, really had no idea what I wanted to do, degree wise.  So I stopped going.  I do think about going back, but still don't know what I want a degree in.....I do pretty well for not having a college degree.

That is really interesting fische. Here the two degrees are pretty much interchangeable for most jobs (especially in residential care), but folks with an LICSW tend to get the higher positions. They do generally cap out before the psychologists in terms of corporate jobs (which makes sense).

Yeah, that's about right here, too.

Yeah for some reason, ND doesn't recognize the MFT as a billable license, but I think MN does. It's really weird how it varies from state to state.
