Crappy week gets crappier

So we're going to look at apartments on Saturday.  Been investigating online all last week and this weekend, and narrowed it down to two that we really like.  One of them had a special on an apartment that usually goes for 1,350, and it's for 999.  2bd 2 ba, walkin closets and fireplace, top floor corner unit, 1,136 square feet, etc.  She put a hold on it for me until Saturday when we're going to look.  Also, the other place is more expensive (but our first choice) so we were going to use the apartment at this joint to negotiate (other place has a 1 br + den, 1 ba at 950 sq feet on the 2nd floor for the same price, but has another 1br + den option that's 200 sq ft bigger available).

Well she just called me and said another couple came in and is very interested in the apartment, and could we come take a look at it today.  Not only am I stuck in this damn apartment without the ability to drive over there and look at it myself, but even if I could talk Noodle into going after work (which I probably couldn't), he wouldn't be willing to sign right then and there without looking at the other place too (and I don't blame him).  So now I have a feeling we're going to miss out on this awesome apartment, as well as a barganing chip for the other place.

Well, at least you've still got your sense of humor.

Sorry it's been rough. Hey, maybe the realtor is using the other couple as a bargaining chip too--maybe it won't end up being a big deal.
  • Sad day :(

I say try try try to get over there and see it tonight.  It sounds like a great deal!

  • That sucks Nugget. Finding a new place is always stressful, and I'm sure doing it during the middle of the holiday rush is even worse.  Might be time to have a lil chat with neighbor upstairs. Hope y'all can find something you're both happy with. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but y'all will find a good place your'e both happy with.

  • Opalsky is right, she could just be trying to make you move faster.  Car dealers do it all the time.

Either way, you'll end up in whatever place you're meant to end up in.  I know that's not very comforting right now, but I really believe that.

    Good luck! :)

  • Oooo!  This reminds me - make sure you check and see if the rent will skyrocket to the original price after the "year lease" is up.  This happened to me... I paid a great rate for a year, a deal, then when it was time to resign my lease, then price went up to the regular rate which was several hundred dollars more!

  • That sucks!  I'm glad you're looking at all upstairs units though.  I hope you don't loose the chance to look at it and weigh your options.  You can always still use it as a bargaining tool - the leasing agents wouldn't have a clue.

Are you mainly searching apartments.com or on the internet ?  Sometimes you have better luck in the newspaper or by just driving around a neighborhood you like.  Independent building owners sometimes have signs outside a place but don't advertise anywhere.  And you can usually get them at a much cheaper rate.  Just a thought
  • Well f*ck me sideways, Noodle was actually willing to go look at them tonight.  Although he's says he's not willing to sign anything until we talk about it.  And the other place can get us in right after the first place to view.  Hopefully we can negotiate a little with the people at River Crossing after the first meeting at Blackberry Pointe.  The dude I just spoke to said they're having a special on those bigger 1 br + dens since they have so many - only $20 more than the smaller one.

If we sign a lease, it will be a two year lease more than likely, so that we can lock in the price.

I know, MN apartments are actually pretty good.  The only two things that suck about this one is the location (it's further into the suburbs than we'd like) and you have to pay $45 a month for underground heated parking (lot is free).

Hmm, well at least it sounds like you'll get to see both of them and make an educated decision.  FI and I went through this same stress when we moved to our current apartment - we had already filled out an application at one place so we gave notice at the place we were living, but then at the last minute the place where we'd applied totally screwed us over and we had literally a week to scramble to find someplace to live.  But like TR said, it worked out for the best and we love our place now (even though it sounds very similar to the 2 bd you are looking at and we pay twice as much, grr - can you tell I am hating LA lately?)

And why do I live in Boston?

Also, I would gladly shell out $45 a month for heated parking. My poor car does not like Boston winters.
  • No kidding, MN winters are the worst.  They both have central air and W/D in unit too, which is much more than I can say for the craptastic pad we're living in now.  Getting one car stolen and another one broken into twice in a year and a half doesn't scream "Live here!"
