Length of bridesmaids dresses

Finally found a dress that I really like for my bridesmaids but I think that for some it needs to hit them at different lengths.  Would that look weird?  They are all different heights/ages/body types.

I only had one girl with me but sent pictures to all and said I'd like it to be an inch or two shorter.  One of the girls said she liked it the length that it is.  I think it would look just fine on her, but for the others it would look less matronly, in our onpinion if it was just a bit shorter.  So my question is, can the dresses be slightly varied in length?  Or will that stand out too much?  If they were all different dresses I might think that it wouldn't be as big of a deal, but with them being the same I thought it might look odd.  Have you had or seen the same dress in slightly different lengths?  And by this I just mean some hitting right at knee and some just above knee.

Or I am I way overthinking this?

I think it'll be just fine. I probably wouldn't even notice as a guest.  The bridesmaids are only really standing next to each other at the ceremony and then everyone is looking at the bride and groom.

  • You are overthinking this.  No one will notice or care if their hems don't align perfectly.  Let them wear what they're comfortable with.

Are you sure the skirt on that dress would still fall right if it were shortened?  I don't think it matters if the hemlines don't match, but I'm not sure that dress would really work to shorten.

ETA: Disclaimer: I have never had to have anything shortened (I have the opposite issue), so I could be totally off, but it's something I would want to make sure would work before you had your friends buy that dress thinking they would only like it if it were shorter.
  • Unless the bridesmaids are all exactly the same height, likely no one will even notice.

  • Yeah, I think you can get away with that length, and if you have some shorter girls, it may hit them more at or below the knee, but that's fine. I'd probably have everyone get them and try them on and then decide if anyone needed to hem. I don't think if it falls at or just below the knee for a couple people it's going to look terribly matronly, so you're probably fine.

  • I'd let them decide if they want to shorten it or not.  I'm not a fan when I have a dress that hits at or just below the knee b.c. I'm short.  I would shorten mine a bit if that was the case.
  • 1) You are overthinking this.

    2) Strapless and matronly are pretty much mutually exclusive, IMO.
  • Coordinating BM's dresses are the way to go, IMHO...that doesn't mean MATCHING every detail. Suit the dress to the height/figure/comfort of the wearer.

  • However they want to hem it, or not, is fine. One of my BMs was 5'2" and one was 5'8". The shorter one had the dress hemmed, but that's just because it was practically tea-length on her. ;)

  • Diff lengths are okay.  My girls cut & styled theirs diff (although that might be hard to tell from this photo), and everyone thought it was neat.  (Well everyone except one person, but pfft Tongue Out ... eat my shorts).

But do have the girls hem it at a length they feel comfortable with, instead of a length you determine.  One inch on a girl with no booty might be appropriate, but one inch on a girl with junk in the trunk might actually be two-three inches.  Just remind them to keep them an appropriate length ... I've seen some pics of girls in mini's, and I just don't understand (insert that Jackie Chan meme).
