Email hacking warning

I heard recently on the news about  a scam where hackers get into your email account and send emails out to your contacts claiming to be you.  You're stranded out of the country with no money, could you please send some, etc.  and people are falling for it because it comes from someone they actually "know".  Anyway, I did get one of those emails this morning so I contacted my friend to let her know so hopefully she can intervene before anyone falls for the scam.

I'm doing my good deed today and giving everyone a heads up about this newest scam.  Have a good Tuesday, E.  I've got a sick baby on my hands so in combination with work, I've not been on very much the last few days.  Hopefully I can catch up soon.  =-)

Re: Email hacking warning

  • Sorry about the sick baby, Mrs. B, but good morning!
  • What a timely warning, B. Sorry about Baby B being sick.
  • This happened to one of my students a few years ago. They contacted his grandfather and said he was in a Canadian prison and he needed bail money wired to him. Luckily, the grandfather was smart enough to know this request wouldn't come through e-mail, and that his grandson was in school. :)

It's a scary world out there!

Sorry about the sick little one. :(

  • We received a telephone thing like this, someone called us saying one of our employees was in jail and we needed to bail him out.  We called his cell phone and turns out he was NOT in jail it was some hoax he didn't even know about.
  • Very creepy, best get better thoughts to baby B.
  • That happened to me, I got an email from one of my fb friends saying she and her family were stranded in Peru and needed me to wire some money. I called her immediately and found out they were safe and sound.

    So scary!

Hope she gets to feeling better!

  • The pharmacist I used to work with had this happen to him. He received an email from his grandson saying he was stranded in Europe and needed to have money wired to him. The wierd thing is, his grandson was at that very time on a flight heading to Europe with some friends. Super creepy.

  • Ooo, this happened to my grandmother a few years ago. She got a phonecall from her "grandson" saying he was in prison in Europe, but she has bad enough dementia and too little money that she called us and my uncle and couldn't remember which grandson they said it was (we're not sure they gave any name at all). It was a huge ordeal because she WOULD NOT believe us that my brother and my cousin were at home and she didn't recognize their voices when they called to say everything was ok. My aunt went over, called the police and they waited for them to call again because my grandmother had told them to call back when she had the money. It's really scary when they prey on people with this kind of dementia.

We then established the family rule that if a) you're in jail overseas you do not call grandma, b) you might just be SOL, and we told her about it.

  • This actually happened to my son-in-law last year but they hacked his facebook.  DD was cooking dinner and got a frantic call from her aunt who was half hysterical that SIL was stranded in the UK.  SIL was standing right next to DD when that call came.

    Feel better Babe B!
