How much cash to take?

Re: How much cash to take?

  • Late reply, sorry-- mandy, when we went into Montego Bay, we just took a van into the "market" area, and since both my H and I are pushovers, we came home with a shitton of homemade goods that the sellers were peddling. Next time we do something like that, I'll just say no to everything, or I'll go with a tour group.
  • Awww!  I used to have a hard time saying no!  I have gotten used to it though, I used to live right downtown and got approached everyday by peddlers.  It takes practice when you are not a "no" sayer.  :)

  • We went to Jamaica and stayed at an AI. Our travel agent recommended we take $150 in cash. We used the credit card for all of the excursions and most of the other souviners and things we bought. For our excursions, we booked them through the resorts consierge desk and the charged it right to our card. It didn't actually show up until after we got back & we had no problems with over charging or anything.

On the excursions, we took maybe $10-15 in cash (tip for the driver, etc) and that was it and left the rest in the hotel safe.  We put our towel & stuff in a duffel bag that one of us carried where ever went with our towels, etc in it.

[QUOTE]I think if you keep the around-the-neck passport holder under your clothes that shouldn't be an issue.  Maybe some people don't wear it under their clothes but we've never had problems.

I went to Jamaica in with my HS back in the day, & this was reccomended to us by the travel agent.

IDK how much $ to take, but I would also suggest maybe taking "some" cash, some travelers cheques, & some credit.

THEN, split the $ up between bags. If 1 thing gets stolen or lost, you will not be stranded.
  • Take cash if you are going out into the towns. Make sure you have lots of one's and fives. Seperate your money if you go out to town to buy things. When you try to barter just pull out a small wad of ones and say this is all i have, like 6 of them and you will get them down in price on almost anything. Don't get crazy and pull out big wads of money, it is like a flashing neon sign. Tipping on the resort is always small bills, usually for your in room maid , bartender and such for better service and it works. Lay a few bills in their hands and you will get your room cleaned better and earlier than other people, and quicker service at the bars, usually very little if no waiting in line for drinks.
  • We took a trip to Mexico this past December to an all inclusive in Riviera Maya. We brought just over $1,000 with us and just took what we needed for our day trips out of the room, which wasn't much.

We ended up taking money back home with us - But I'd much rather go with too much than not enough...cause ya never know! The ONE time we ate lunch outside of the resort (that wasn't on an excursion), was in Playa del Carmen, and it cost us $66 USD. So be prepared for that type of stuff..

    Have fun!
