thermometers

Has anyone ever used one of the thermometers that just scans across the forehead?

I just bought a somewhat head-like thermometer, but it gives me a different read out every time. My doctors have asked that I track my temperature multiple times throughout the day--and I hate having to monitor what I eat or drink prior to using an oral thermometer--and sitting there with it in my mouth for a minute.

Any suggestions?

Re: thermometers

  • The kind they use on children in the ear are pretty accurate.  And I don't think they are very expensive at walmart.

  • I second the above, ear ones are going to be more accurate than the forehead one... and, your temp should vary slightly throughout the day, so if that's what you're seeing, don't stress.
  • Go with an ear one...we use the forehead scanners at the daycare and I HATE them. They never seem to give you an accurate reading.
  • Hate to tell you this but rectal temp is the most accurate

Oh, Oot--I knew this, but I wasn't even going to go there....

In the ear it is!! I realize my temp changes throughout the day, I just want to avoid false temp read outs based on food/drink temps.

  • Whatev, Rach.  You know you want to use the rectal thermometer.

  • I had an mystery illness that went undiagnosed for almost a year.  Fevers were part of this illness so needless to say I became an expert on the subject.  I could feel it if my temp was elevated even just to 99.0 degrees.

Throughout all of this I just used a CVS digital oral thermometer.  I was told that it only matters what you ate/drank for like 10 minutes or less so I don't think you need to worry too much about that for your reads.  It is interesting to me that they want you to monitor it throughout the day.  I was told that the changes throughout the day are usually random and wouldn't help the doctors diagnose me so I was never told to track them.  I mostly tracked them myself for controlling the temp with tylenol.

I hope that your doctors are able to figure out what is going on with you.  Let me know if you want to know more about what I went through since I was pretty much seen by every type of specialist and had every scan, biopsy and lab test done before finally getting a diagnosis and thus treatment.

    good luck
