Place card Help

What is the proper etiquette for names on place cards?

For a couple with kids- Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family

Married Couples- Mr and Mrs. Smith

Individual- Ms. Smith

How would I write the cards for couples who aren't married? Do they receive separate cards?

Thanks

I would think that every person gets an individual card regardless if they are married or not.

  • unless they're sitting on eachothers laps?
  • place cards should be one to each seat (or escort cards being on a table telling people which table they are at) - I've always seen it as one person per card.  Mr. Smith gets a card, Mrs. Smith gets a card, Jr. Smith gets a card - if they are place cards they are at adjacent seats, or at least all at the same table :)

I'm not sure that was the answer you're looking for - but that's how I've always seen it.

  • That works. I was at a wedding last month and both our names were on the same card. So I wanted to double check.

    Thanks
  • I've actually never seen cards for each individual person.  Every wedding I've been to has had cards per couple saying which table to sit at, and meal choice if necessary.  We are doing one per couple or family, and the wording is going to be the same as our invitation wording.  Mr. & Mrs. John Smith, (& family if necessary, or if only one child then we will name the child).  For guests that aren't married we will write Mr. John Smith & Ms. Jane Doe.

This is what you do for escort cards, I am only doing these so I will have them the same way invitations went out like you said.  However, place cards go in front of each seat to say where the individual is to sit once they get to the table and they should be written out one individual on each card.  I haven't been to a wedding with place cards in a long time though.
  • I guess I should be calling them escort cards then. I'm using them to tell people which table to sit at.
  • Thanks jnic.  I guess I really never knew the difference.  And maybe a lot of people don't since there is some confusion.  I have been calling them place cards all along, and I guess I'm really doing escort cards.  I was really wondering why people thought it would be so weird to have 2 names on one card, since thats all I've ever seen.  Yeah our cards are just to say which table to sit it.  Where they sit at once at the table is up to them.
