Gift etiquette in a recession

I'm wondering how people deal with the registry issue when money is tight for your guests. Is registering rude?

    Obviously no one should solicit gifts and registries should not be mentioned.  But if you do register, register for gifts in a wide variety of price points.  It's not rocket science, and I don't know how a blog is required to assist people through the process.
