a really stupid question about invitations

I know they are sent out 6-8 weeks in advance.......but in advance of what?  The actual wedding date, or the day your final numbers are due to the venue/caterer?  Our venue wants a final headcount 1 week prior to the wedding.

I sent mine about 7 weeks before the due date for the head count, which is two weeks before.

The wedding. 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding date.

I sent mine out about 7 weeks before the wedding, which ended up being a little over 4 weeks before the RSVP date.
