There are varying degrees of formal. Yours is one of them.

Edit: If you were asking because you wanted to suggest attire on your invites, don't do that.

  • It really depends on what your dress and venue look like, and what you want.  If your reception starts at 6 and you're serving BBQ and beer and wine, less formal.  If it starts at 6 with a traditional buffet or plated dinner, more formal.

Do you have a picture of your dress or the venue?

More info needed - venue, food served, events, number of guests, flower arrangements, WP number, etc.

  • what kind of invitations are you considering?

Ivory or white, engraved invitations are only needed for the most formal weddings (black tie or white tie). It sounds like you have a lot more lee-way to use colors or decoration on your invitations.

  • You gals are the BEST!! :)
II will be a traditional buffet. - The venue is the Sheraton @ Arlington. (Plaza on the Hill)

    This is the dress..

  • You're fine, then. Do you have an idea of where you want to get your invitations? Check out some sites like the American Wedding, MtGatsby.com and Invitations by Dawn. Any of those should work for you.

  • I have yet to pick invites. I've been putting them off. I really wanted to include the peacock theme - but thought maybe that would fit in well if I was considered a formal wedding.I will take a look at those sites Meredith - thoughts on the peacock theme??
  • There's a chick on etsy who specifically does really nice peacock themed invites.

  • That looks very pretty. I would go with a pocketfold invite, something pretty, but not necessarily engraved and traditional.

I think it sounds nice! Using things like blues, greens, maybe purple? Some feathers in your centerpieces? I love peacock colors. I would definitely use those colors on the invitations, and you might be able to find something with a peacock, too.

FWIW, my wedding is semi-formal (which isn't really a real word/dress code, but that's how I best describe it). The ceremony is in a chapel, the reception is at a small country club. We're serving beer, wine and well drinks. There ceremony is at 5:30. Most of my guests have indicated they are wearing cocktail attire. These are my invitations:

They're on pretty heavy cardstock and use satin ribbon, but I still used colors. (And they're metallic!)

  • @ mags I've had that pocket fold idea in my head for months... I really think I will go that route.

@ temerityjane the one from Italy?

  • I love the idea of the Peacock theme, plus as a guest, when I get an invite, I'm more excited about the wedding if the invite is in bright colors with some intriguing graphics like a peacock feather.  It would have me thinking, "ooh, I can't wait to see how they've decorated and how everyone will look!"
IMO, better to let your creativity show through on your invites than not.
As my fiance is fond of saying, "Just Relax....."
  • @ mere love the colors!!

@ mags I will take check it out!! :)

Thank you so much!! You know non of my non-engaged friends get the haze I have been in about getting all the deets down. I feel understood here!! :)
  • @ Karen I like the way you think. I like the idea of the formal wedding. But I also want my guests to feel relaxed.. and know they're gonna have a good time. ;)
  • Oooh pretty dress and venue!  Yeah, I'm thinking it's on the more formal side.

I love peacock colors - teals and blues.  Very pretty!

  • Looks formal to me.
  • It sounds formal, but not black-tie-- but you can make it as formal as you want-- IMO I would go with formal but not black tie because of your wedding time. Sounds like it will be beautiful in whatever way you pick

  • The Sheraton plaza is such an awesome venue.  My work is using the hotel proper for an event there next year and part of our tour included the plaza.   Seeing it in person bare and having seen other people's pictures of weddings there, I would say it is definately semi formal but probably not full on formal.
