*Kikibaby*

I notice that you mentioned that you have a greyhound? I recently adopted one and I wonder if I could ask you some questions. How old is yours and how old was she when she was adopted? Mine is 4 and we adopted her about a month ago. She is an angel and was surprisingly well trained already, but she has TERRIBLE separation anxiety and is not getting any better. Did you have any experience with this or any advice? We've tried everything from leaving a radio on to treats and Kongs to trying to ignore it and nothing is improving. Any advice?

Re: *Kikibaby*

  • Unfortunately, our greyhound passed away last fall.  But, she was about 8.  She never really had seperation anxiety, but DH's previous greyhound had it big time.  So bad, that she tore out of her kennel and destroyed the house (chewed up a towel bar, tore carpet up, ripped a hole through the closet door...).

Anyway, some advice he got at the time from http://greytalk.com was to try this: http://www.amazon.com/DAP-Diffuser/dp/B00063MSLK. It's called a DAP Diffuser- I don't know a ton about it, but it puts out some sort of pheremones that supposedly relax dogs with seperation anxiety.

Hope that helps!  Greyhounds are awesome :)

  • Wow I am really sorry about that.

Thank you so much for the advice, I haven't heard about that before. I keep hearing the same old "you just have to deal with it until they snap out of it" and I am looking for anything else that could help. I love my girl, we bonded instantly but that is probably part of the problem with her anxiety.

Greyhounds have always been my favorite!
  • Do you have any other pets?  Maybe a friend would help keep her calm while you're away?

  • Actually we don't have any other pets and we thought of a sitter, but with our work schedules we are only both away from her for a few hours at a time (max 3 or 4) and we aren't sure it would be worth it. We are still considering it though.
  • Or maybe doggie day care for those few hours, if nothing else is working?

  • I should clarify; by "friend" I meant another doggie.

  • LOL yes we are considering other dogs in the future, maybe near future. I love dogs and can't wait to get more! The only reason I don't have any already is because I just bought my house not even 6 months ago so we are just now starting to build our family of pets. I do think another dog would help her relax- thanks for the advice!
