Oil Spill Photos

**Warning** Some of them are quite graphic. I cried.

Why is there not more public outcry on this? I find it really horrible that the gov't isn't taking more action.

Re: Oil Spill Photos

  • I just saw some of those on cnn.com.  They are so so sad and terrible.

Trust me though, there is a lot of outcry, that's why it's on the news 24/7.  And there are TONS of environmental professionals down there working on the cleanup.  My H's old firm in Tampa has almost their entire staff there because BP is contracting with firms to work on the clean-up.  Not that I'm saying it's fine or anything because it's not, it's horrible, but people are working hard on it.  It's not like nothing is being done.

  • I think theres been tremendous public outcry. In fact, did you know that there was a recent break on the Alaskan pipe line? It was totally overshadowed by this. And what else can the government do? I think they're doing everything they can to fix the leak and until then, there's not much that can be done. Obama has 'billed' BP for 70 mil already. Not making any excuses, I just can't think of anything they can do until it's stopped for good. And then I'll be looking to the government to step up in clean up.

  • Also, H was watching some online news thing the other night. There was a spill in the 70s in the gulf that was almost identical to this one. The similarities are so weird. They tried the exact same containment plans in the same exact order. There was also an Alaskan pipe line break that was overshadowed. It's creepy how exactly it has been repeated.

Maybe I should've said that BP isn't taking care of this as responsibly as they could. The CEO sure has said a lot of stupid stuff.

That IS really creepy. And really aggrivating too. What finally worked for the other one?

And the Alaskan pipe line thing I haven't heard anything about. I'm checking it out now!

That could be.  I've been talking with people about it almost daily.  It's horrible.

I think at this point BP is doing everything they can do, but the spill shouldn't have happened in the first place.  The thing that makes me mad is that I think their first efforts to seal the well failed because they were trying to preserve it so they could use it later. Now they're finally just doing everything they can to stop it, even if it means it's shut down forever.  They should have done that from the get-go.  I hope this bankrupts BP.

  • Dude, he has. The one about "I just want my life back"? Yeah, so do those 11 killed on the rig. Douche bag. I think the government is really doing all they can at THIS point. BP on the other hand, not doing so hot. But then again, I guess there are physical limitations to what they can do. It does take time. The one in the 70s that I was talking about? 9 months to stop that one.

  • They drilled relief wells. Basically other holes to relieve some of the pressure. However, that takes a ton of time too. My favorite part about the other one? You know how we first tried to put the big box over it? They first tried a cone. Operation Sombrero. YES.

That's the thing, Dani, they AREN'T. They turned to a  chemical dispersant that basically 'eats' the oil. They had 2 to choose from. One that was almost 100% effective  and not very toxic. The other was only like 54% effective and very toxic. They choose the toxic one because they had shares in it or something.

OMG 9 months!? That's insane. I hope technology has advanced us further!

  • Not really. Same technology. Totally off topic, but you know another technology that has remained the same? The eye doctor things. I talked to my guy and he said iit's basically what they started out with, with few changes.

  • I've been reading more and more lately about all of the health problems that the clean-up crews are having too.  It's so scary. No one knows what is going to come of all of this.

I cried watching the news the other night when they interviewed the wife of one of the guys that died in the explosion.  He knew he might die.  Before he left for that last trip back to the rig, he taught her how to take care of the finances and how to handle the RV "in case anything ever happened to him".  I think he knew, and it was so so sad.

  • OMG those make me cry. I have been going on and on about this and how it's affecting everything and will start working its way on up this part of the coast. It disturbs me what it's doing to our wildlife. I heard if what they did yesterday does not work, it will be August for their next attempt. AUGUST??!!!! That's 2 months away! It makes me so sad and angry.

  • I just saw some images on the Today show, and I almost got sick... I think criminal charges should be brought against BP and the company that operates the rig. Even if only for the deaths of the 11 crew members... But I'm sure that won't happen.

Well, you can't file criminal charges against a company, only individuals.  So they'd have to prove that individuals  in the company planned for their deaths somehow, or somehow directly caused their deaths.  I definitely don't see that happening.

  • So heartbreaking.  We cruised right through the oil spill on our HM.  It's horrifying how far-reaching it is.

My best friend works for BP, and they've been told not to wear any of their BP clothing in public as one employee was publicly abused and threatened for doing so.

Oh my God, I bet.  Also that's sad for your friend and employees of BP who had nothing to do with it and now have to fear for their safety.
