We were talking about how to bustle a gown with a chiffon overlay a few weeks ago, so here's what happened at my fitting.

My particular dress has an A-line satin skirt, but the overlay had a drastically different line.  The seamstress couldn't bustle them together without the chiffon poofing out and creating a 'saddlebag' effect on the hips.

The easy solution was to sew in a wrist strap and carry the train around all night, but I wasn't happy with that.

The PITA solution was to bustle the underlay, then do a separate bustle on the overlay.  I ended up with 7 bustle points (4 on the underlay, 3 on the overlay), but your mileage may vary.  The points will be hook and eye closures.

  • Thank you!  I'm really glad that you got back to me on this, I'm going for my fitting in three weeks, so if they try to do the loop or saddlebag things, I'll have some idea of what to ask them for.

I'm glad you found something that worked for you.  I definitely wouldn't have been cool with looping my dress around my wrist all night, either, I think that would be uncomfortable after awhile.
