Christmas Tree Settle Time?

So we got our tree this afternoon and set it up in the living room.  H says that we have to wait "a couple days" to let it "settle"

Is this true?  Sometimes he says things that are incorrect.  :)

Re: Christmas Tree Settle Time?

  • My mom always referred to what mica described as "settling". We would leave our tree in a bucket of water in the garage for a little while to let the branches drop and the first (enormous) batch of needles falls off from the trauma of transport (:
  • Don't have much to contribute other than that I'm jealous of all of you having big ole Christmas trees :)

I'm from Maine too!  (I love "meeting" people from Maine)  But we always had a fake tree (my fiance gives me crap about that because we don't live far from a tree farm)  My father was a volunteer firefighter and we would always be in Massachusetts visiting family and was worried about it being a fire hazard and my mother didn't want to clean up needles.

I always wanted a real tree and luckily FI agrees with me.

  • We very rarely had real trees growing up. But yes, it is true that you need to let it "fall" before starting to decorate it. My IL's get a real tree every single year and they usually put it in the stand with water and then wait a day or two to decorate.
  • I've never heard that.  Christmas trees do need a little time to drop their branches after being tied up, though.  We just put up our tree, and the branches are leveling out a bit (we bought it yesterday and it stayed in its wrapping until this afternoon, so all the branches were smushed).

Yeah I think it's the leveling out that he thinks it needs to do.  I want to decorate!

  • Last year we didn't wait to decorate, and a bunch of our ornaments fell off the tree when the branches sagged later.  Oops.

[QUOTE]I have never heard of that. We buy our tree, put it up the minute we get home.  Usually we don't put the ornaments on immediately because we just don't want to deal with the tree anymore, haha.

I did direct some swears at the tree when we were putting it up at first.  But I'm over it.

  • We did that growing up and my dad would keep the tree outside for 2-3 days before bringing it in.

  • That's interesting. I never heard of that. When I was a kid we always had real trees but we always decorated them right away.
