Boobs

I just made the appointment for my first fitting in early March.  I have no idea what to wear under my dress to keep my boobs in place. Here is the top of my dress again, more PIB.

Sweetheart top with a tulle-ish V-neck overlay.  I'm in the C cup range.  On the bottom, I'm going to be doing Spanx and possibly a mermaid crinoline.  I hate wearing strapless bras, but I don't know if longline bras are somehow better.  I also don't know if sewn-in cups would work with the style of my dress.

Thoughts?

Re: Boobs

  • There's basically no inner structure to the dress, other than a lining.

  • I would try it on with a long line.  I was surprised by how well I liked mine.

  • Cups Cups Cups. I hate strapless bras, there's always the chance that you'll be pulling at it all night, plus, they always seem to either smoosh or not provide enough support. I've had cups sewn into pretty much every formal dress I've ever worn and never had a problem.
  • I would ask the seamstress what she recommends. I would hate to see you spend the $$$ on a longline bra, only to find out that cups would work best for you and the dress.
  • I was going to ask at the fitting, but I thought I'd need it before.  Hmm.

[QUOTE]What sort of boning is in the dress, if any?  I am in the D range, and ended up not needing a bra at all. I was sucked into the dress, and there was so much shape that a bra actually made my bewbs look weird.

I would love to experience this.  I'm in the D range as well, but I think I will end up wearing a longline  bra.  It's been over 5 months since I've physically seen my dress, so can't recall how much boning, if any, there is.
  • I would just have cups sewn in. If they're a good shape they'll blend right in to the dress and anyone looking at you wouldn't know they're there. I had cups sewn in to my dress for our wedding. I also didn't want to have to worry about the bra sitting higher on me than the dress.

And I say "good shape" because for the first wedding I was a bridesmaid in, I asked to have cups sewn into my dress. The seamstress sewed in pointy cups that reminded me of Madonna's pointy bra. I was pretty self-conscious about my boos all night in that dress.
  • You're supposed to have the bra figured out before the fittings.

  • For those of you that have had cups sewn in--how big are you on top?  I'm worried it won't be enough support, though I LOVE the idea.

  • Have you considered Nu-bra?  I was shocked at how well they stay on.

  • Nu-bras frighten me.  They look really sticky and uncomfortable.

  • I used a longline bra and spanx on bottom. I chose cups sewn in though, just because longline bras, to me at least, can be kind of uncomfortable. It stabbed my lower stomach all day :)

ps- Longline bras aren't that expensive. I got mine for like $25. I mean it probably wasn't the nicest piece of lingerie ever made, but it worked. Also, what I did was buy several pieces of undergarments to bring to the first fitting, so I was "prepared" technically before the fitting, but left the tags on and only tried them on twice so I returned the ones that I didnt' like.

<div>Duh, that would have been helpful of me to post, wouldn't it? Depending on my weight I'm a C/D. Granted, my wedding dress had some structure to it - but like I said I've used them for other dresses - that weren't nearly as structured - and still loved it. With long line/strapless I always end up pulling at myself all night and I didn't want to deal with it.</div>
  • Ooh, good to know, lynds.  Maybe I'll "visit" my dress to see if they think sewn in cups would work.  I would hate to be tugging at a bra all day.

I hate nu-bras. even the first time I wore them, completely clean skin, no lotion or anything, they were still falling off. I had to readjust all night.

there is some very light boning in my dress, like two flimsy bones that are right in line with my nipples to give me a princess shape. my wedding undergarments/support will be: cups sewn in + spanx (higher power shorts). I'm a full B cup, almost a C depending on the brand.

  • FWIW, I'm wearing this dress for a wedding and I'm getting cups sewn in and I'm not worried about it at all. Obviously, there is very little other structure in this dress. Sewn in cups are a modern miracle.
  • I voted strapless, but now I'm thinking cups. I wouldn't do a longline with your dress. I tried one one with my dress and you can see where the end of the bra is and my dress has a lot of structure/fabric to it. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

  • I'm a C and I did the longline bra. I tried it without and with a strapless but the dress wrinkled down my torso. The longline gave the top enough shape that it held the entire torso up and kept it nice a smooth.
  • This might seem silly, but can you have cups sewn in for shape and wear a strapless bra for support and boning? That's what I ended up doing, initially just planning on the cups since my dress back was so low, but wanted the extra underneath and found a low-back strapless bra from VS. I'm also a B- on the right and a B+ on the left, so it made me feel more secure. You can always pick up a few options for the fitting, don't take the tags off, and see what your seamstress says. Then just take back whatever you aren't going to use (except the Nubra, once you open it I think it's non-refundable). GL

  • I tried the sewn in cups (I am a C-cup) and they just did not work for me at all. My dress was corseted and had some structure, but with the cups there was NO room for my boobs in the dress (strapless sweetheart) so I was spilling out the top and feared should I lift my arms EVER during the day I would pop out the top.

I also made an attempt at a longline and just felt "constricted" in it and it was not necessary as my dress was not that low in the back. I searched around for a good strapless bra (I am a former strapless hater - then finally found ones that actually FIT!). It worked perfectly with no tugging at all (and DH commented a couple times that my boobs looked very supple that day...ha).

A longline might not work well if your dress if very fitted and does not have much structure in the dress itself, as longlines tend to add some weird shapes even if you are very thin, etc.
