Kindle vs. Nook

So I know this has been discussed before, but LVB had seriously interested me in the Kindle. However, I was wondering if anyone had experience the Nook and if you all think one is better than the other? They're pretty much the same price now, so I was wondering if the touch screen and book cover view at the bottom of the Nook made it a better choice, or if there were Kindle features that I don't know about that makes IT the better choice? Such decisions!

Re: Kindle vs. Nook

• they are both the devil's work :P

I love books
• I've been trying to make up my mind on them too. So far what I've heard is that everyone is happy with theirs, so you can't go wrong. The Kindle has the advantage of the 3G network, so you can download books anywhere. The Nook has booksharing though where you can actually exchange books with other Nook users free of charge (for 14 days).

I'm still on the fence, and need to figure it out before Christmas.
• I just went through this, and the girls on my club board convinced me that Kindle users seem to be happier. What really sold me was that the Kindle had a larger screen and was more lightweight, plus I like the look of it better (but that's a personal preference). They also sell them at Target (and apparently Best Buy) now, and I had a Target GC.

FWIW, the Nook also has a 3G option, for only $10 more than the Kindle with 3G.

• Ooooh good to know Laura. I also like the fact that you can take a Nook into any B&N if you need help setting it up or need to get it fixed. Although if they are selling Kindles in stores now I wonder if they would have a similar program.

Katie, you can also go in B&N stores and start reading books for free! I liked the abilityto automatically be able to get epub (library) books without any extra steps, but from my limited research I couldn't find that many that I would be interested in anways - at least not enough to justify how it was easier than skipping an extra step it would take to convert for Kindle. I like the fact that you can touch the Nook screen and see the book covers at the bottom in color. However, I just keep hearing how great the Kindle is. I figure there has to be something that I don't know about yet!
• Laura, I'm looking at the smallest versions for both the Kindle and Nook for financial reasons. Do you know if the screen is still larger on the Kindle, or is that just the Kindle DX (the big guy that cost $300+)?

I liked that too, it was sort of what kept me on the fence, but I'm pretty sure I can at least get some help from Target. Also that I believe you can go to a B&N and 'borrow' books? Plus the borrowing books from other people (including people with the Nook app for the iPad) is pretty awesome. I'm hoping that the Kindle gets on board with something like that since I wound up going with them.

Honestly, it was the weight difference that really convinced me - 8.7 vs 12.1 ounces (for the 3G one). I feel like that will be noticeable after a few hours! I literally just made this decision yesterday.

• Ooooh that's a pretty sweet deal. I guess you could always pick up a paper book and start reading it so that's nice if it translates to digital.
I still love my paperbooks, but I just have too freaking many. If nothing else it will be worth the money for when I go on trips. I normally have a bag with nothing but books.
• J just read that B&N is in financial trouble and internal turmoil, so I don't know how that's going to affect their book sales, and he has backed away from the Nook for that reason for now.
Best Buy carries both models, along with the ereader and the iPad. I'd actually like an iPad AND a Kindle.

Brie has a Nook and I think she really likes it.

I have the Kindle app on my iPod; other than (obviously) it being smaller page-wise than I'd like, it works well.

• The Nook is bigger, but has a smaller reading area than the regular Kindle. I couldn't find anywhere online that actually gave the diagonal of the reading screen (the Kindle's is 6") but it says the screen in 6" diagonal which includes that color thing at the bottom. If that goes away (it might, I don't know!) then they are the same reading area.

I'm being a total PW, but I'm with you Katie - I love paper books, but I'm running out of space for them, and I kept finishing them on my train ride and just twiddling my thumbs, so I liked the idea of being able to have multiple books with me at once.

• I love my Nook! I've already shared books with people, and downloaded lots of free ones too through Project Gutenberg.

Honestly, everyone who has either one seems pretty happy, so those are the two features that really stand out to me. Everything else (ease of use, battery life, and so on) is great.
• I really LOVE my kindle. I can get free (bad) romance novels off amazon and apparently B&N is being sold. I don't know anything specific, but it could affect the Nook's future.

• I've bought about 90% of my books on Amazon and have done a lot of business with them. That is one reason why I'm leaning towards Kindle. I also feel like they might be able to withstand financial turmoil better than B&N (like Laura said). I just didn't want to jump into one thing without researching the other!

From the research I've done, I've heard it's best to stick with the two and not go for the other eReaders out there...

Well, I just whipped it out and measured it (hehe) and my Nook has a 6" reading pane. The color thing is additional to that.
• Yay!! :-P I'm a dork, I don't get too many PMs hehe
• Kindle!! love it. love it. love it.

question about the nook- to nook owners? can you turn off the touch screen? I was thinking about it and I think that the backlit part of it would bother me while reading. Not that it matters I have my kindle and I am in love just curious :)

• Once or twice, Birdie, when I'm looking for something kind of obscure. But they're adding titles all the time, so sometimes it's just a matter of moving on to the next thing on my reading list for a while.

I wanted to read "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain and was annoyed that they didn't have it, but then two weeks later, there it was. Still haven't been able to get my hands on this month's NBC book of the month, but I wasn't all that interested anyway.
• I have a Nook, and my dad had a Kindle. We compared them once for fun - he ended up liking my Nook so much he sold the Kindle and bought one as well. My Nook did better in every "test" we devised, from battery life (active and in "sleep" mode) to extra storage space. The only time the Kindle "won" was when he found the book I wanted (Player Piano) for a dollar cheaper.

But yeah, my Nook is my best friend. And I had half a room in my apartment dedicated to just my purely for pleasure books.

• I think the last time I compared the two, the Nook had just come out and didn't have as many books. This was also when they were a lot more expensive and I couldn't justify buying one. However, my birthday and Xmas are coming up... Now the decision is tough!! :)

• I have a Nook and really enjoy it. I compared it to the Kindle (my co-worker loves hers so I was curious) but still ended up with the Nook. It's really rare not to find a book on BN but if I can't, I check other ebook sites since I can sideload non-BN ebooks. I don't think you can really go wrong with either though.

AHHH I can't make a decision!!!!!

I think you and Kate are plotting against me for this week's Grey's. You both haven't answered me yet. :-P
• I have a Nook and I love it with my entire soul.

Opalsky lent me a book and it kept me occupied on two long flights!

Seriously, though, I went with the Nook largely because of the lending feature (my SIL is getting one and we'll share lots of books, I share with a few friends, my boss has one and wants to borrow some stuff). There is no equivalent to that on the Kindle that isn't questionable/shady. I am also able to get library books on my Nook, which is great.

I've had no issues with it being heavy. I bought a cute cover for it on Etsy and it travels with me everywhere. I like the touch screen for scrolling through pages.

Ultimately, I think they're pretty similar--I went with the Nook partially because I had a large B&N gift card from my credit card rewards points, and think I would have been happy with the Kindle too.

• I just bought the latest generation Kindle. Haven't gotten it yet, but it was lighter, more aesthetically pleasing, and I didn't want to spend another ten dollars =P I don't know anyone with an e-reader, let alone a Nook, so the book lending feature wasn't that big of a deal for me. I also just torrent my eBooks, so it's not like I'm paying for them anyways (not that I'm advocating doing this, what with the whole illegality and whatnot, but I did because I'm cheap).

• The only thing I really like more on the kindle than the nook is the ability to highlight and make notes easily.

Other than that, you CAN get free books on the kindle, and I think they're really pretty similar. Originally I got the kindle because of the availability of books from amazon, but there are probably a lot for the nook now, too.

• iPad! It has access to both the Kindle and the Nook libraries. I know the backlight supposedly causes eyestrain, but the negative flash thing that the Kindle does when you turn the page kind of makes me feel like I'm having a seizure. I have my iBook app set up to look more like a regular book (smaller font, sepia print), and I love it to little bitty bits.

• FI and I both love our Nooks! Someone mentioned that the Kindle has 3G - so does the Nook. I like the touch screen instead of a keyboard (I wouldn't want to look at the keyboard at the bottom all the time), and when we tried comparing availability of books, we didn't see much different. We both love ours and would definitely recommend!

I'm also a lover of real books and would never stop buying them. Our issue now is that we don't have room to buy more books (we're in a 1 bedroom apartment) and the mobility of an ereader is very convenient, not to mention its smaller and lighter than some novels.
