health insurance vent!

Dear Vision insurance & Aetna,

Why is it that you cover an eye exam every 2 yrs but contact RX are only good for 1 year??

So I have to pay out of pocket every other year for my exam!

Re: health insurance vent!

  • Do you have separate health and vision?  My health insurance will cover an exam.  Will your health insurance cover on the years your vision insurance won't?

  • Whoa, that blows.  Any chance you can explain to your doctor and get a 2 year prescription?

My insurance is on my shitlist right now, too.

Nope, vision is under the Aetna medical insurance....  I wish it was the way you asked about!
  • I haven't done the lasik but I hear it's extremely fast and painless.  Does insurance cover it?

A lot of insurances won't cover it, but my best friend priced out what she'd save on exams and contacts and in just 3 years it would have paid for itself.

[QUOTE]Ours covers an exam/contacts each year, but a new pair of glasses every two. I need to suck it up and get lasik, but I'm too much of a baby to do it.

I am dying to get lasik.....I know it will freak me out, them poking around in my eye, but I will do it to never have to wear contacts again!  I have been wearing contacts since I was 12.  I was talking to hubby today about it, my eye DR recommended a place and I am going to see about going for a consultation.

I don't think the DR will do a 2yr RX, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.
  • I have the same situation with my vision insurance, and my script changes almost every year!

I don't think most insurances cover lasik since it's elective. When I was under my moms they would cover about 1k of the procedure and I think it cost about 4k.

  • Mine is the same way, Beach.  And my eye doctor will NOT write me a prescription for 2 years because he says he needs to see me once a year, but I suspect it's because he likes getting paid every year instead of every two years.

A regular eye exam is covered by my health insurance, but not the contact lens fitting.  It's messed up.

My doctor did say though that he can bill the insurance every year and write a letter saying it's necessary to have a contact lens fitting every year.  So...we'll see how that goes in Sept.

I would loooove to get Lasik.  FI's parents both had it done last year and are just going in for "touch-ups" now.  They love it.  I'm just worried I'd get it and then still end up needing slight correction (which is really common) which defeats the whole purpose.

  • Up until yesterday, my RX changed every year too, but it stayed the same this time.

I believe lasik is much more affordable then 4k now.

Weird and annoying, but it's actually illegal in some states. I ran into this problem when I ordered contacts last.
  • I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but everyone I know who has had Lasik is now back in glasses or contacts.  And with insurance not covering it, that REALLY sucks.  DH wanted it but that's the one thing holding him back.

I hate that too. What I do is just get my exam, then order a huge number of contact lenses. Sure, I have to pay for THEM out of pocket, but it also saves me the hassle of going to the eye doctor more than once every two years.

I would also LOVE lasik and I hear some insurance covers it because in the long run they save money over glasses and contacts. My FI's new insurance covers some of it, so we're looking into it. As long as they don't explain it to me in graphic detail, I'll be okay. ;-)

Yeah, it's definitely not the magic bullet some people think it is.  And I think most people definitely need at least reading glasses because they only correct your eyes to distance.  Maybe they can do the monovision thing where one is distance and one is reading?  But then what about in between stuff like a computer screen?  I'm so jealous of those damn people born with perfect vision, haha.  I've had glasses/contacts since the 4th grade.

I had a friend who got it done, and they gave him the option of watching the person before him.  He almost chickened out after that.

See I am the opposite, everyone I know has had it done for years now, and has no issues.  My eye DR had it done 10 yrs ago, she said in a couple years she will need reading glasses, but practically everyone when they get older will need some form of reading glasses.

So I just called the eye dr. office, they did tell me it was very odd that the isurance will only cover exam every 2 yrs, but by law they are requried to write the RX for 1 year at a time.  Because the contact sitting directly on your eye.
  • I know the details and I am not worried about it....you are awake during it, but they put drops in your eyes to numb them, plus I cant see a thing without my contacts in, so I doubt I would even see what is going on !  Maybe the drops make your eyes blurry too...who knows.  I am going to go for a consultation!

Lasik ROCKS! and the poking in the eye is minimal. THe whole procedure took 5 minutes. It was awesome. They totally numb you eye and give you a sedative. The weird parts are when they tape your eyelids open and when they actually peel back your cornea. Its just weird that one second you are looking at a flashing red light and the next you can't see anything at all. But then they fix it and use a little squeegee to put your cornea back in place and its all good. I was supposed to keep my eyes shut, but I could see when I got up from the table. It was hazy for a few days, but not blurry at all.

Now I'm 20/15 in both eyes. Do it!

I'm going through this with Aetna right now too except it's my eye doctors giving me the runaround about how much it should cost and what insurance would cover. They tried to tell me today that my Aetna medical insurance wouldn't cover my regular eye exam unless there was something specifically wrong with my eyes that the doctor was seeing me for. Like last year they billed it as my eye doctor was seeing me about my dry eye, the year before that it was something else I can't remember. UM, HOW ABOUT NO?! I just called Aetna to verify and yeah everything should be covered, the refraction, the glaucoma test, all that, without the doctor seeing me for a specific problem.
