Dislocation of bones...

Has anyone ever dislocated a kneecap before? I think I almost did so this morning. Who knew that was even possible?

Re: Dislocation of bones...

  • Oh. There was meant to be a poll here, but I finished my beer, got a little too tipsy and pressed post rather than poll. Apologies.
  • I had no idea that was possible.  Knee caps freak me out and so do dislocated bones.  The combination is wretched in my mind.

How did you do that?  Are you ok now?

  • I've never personally done it, but it has happened to friends of mine.  Hope you're okay!

It's sore and I can't really bend it without it hurting. It was incredibly painful at the time... and ridiculous.

I woke up this morning, and one of my cats who is usually very snuggly wasn't with me. Curious as to where he was, I kneeled down and looked under the bed. As I went to get up, I moved my body up, there was this popping noise, and suddenly my knee was killing me. I almost passed out/threw up, the pain was so bad.

I think I've done it once before, but last time it happened when I had my leg on a weird angle and it sort of... went on a backwards angle (ok that makes no sense but I can't figure out how to describe it- it bent the opposite way it should) and then popped and hurt a lot. I just figured I'd strained some ligaments last time and didn't realise it's actually possible for it to dislocate. Last time was worse, but this time wasn't too fun either. H woke up to me swearing and hyperventilating on the ground by our bed, haha.

  • Is it doctor visit worthy?  I seriously shudder at the thought that those things just happen randomly.  Be careful though, each time it happens it gets easier for it to happen again.  (does that make sense?)

  • This morning after taking the dog out I was super sleepy and my eyes were blurry so with full speed walking force I rammed my entire right shoulder into the wall. I hit so hard my teeth clamped down and it knocked me back. Pretty sure thats why my shoulder, head and jaw have been killing me all day.
  • Knee caps skeeve me out for some reason. In school we had a model that you could "peel back" the patella while it was still attached to the tendons above and below, and it kinda made me want to vomit.

  • I just get a dislocated toe randomly. It's always the index toe on either foot and at first I had no clue what it was doing because it would only do it at night. Then one day I felt it pop and looked down and the toe was about half an inch forward from the other toes. I just pop it back in now but omg does it hurt.

  • I've tried to pinpoint a cause but I've got nothing. It happens mostly at night though, so maybe I'm straining my toes in my sleep?
  • That is highly bizarre. Could it be getting caught on your bedsheets as you move around?
  • Yes, and yesterday I kept banging myself on things. My elbow, shin, wrist, knee, etc. I'm a walking disaster.
  • Hmm that could be. I used to sleep with the sheet tucked in really tight at the bottom (to keep monsters from eating my toes). I wonder if I would bend it against the sheet or something.

I hate walking into things, especially in the morning. Dh used to get so worried when we first moved in together. I'd get up, go to the bathroom and hit every wall/corner/door on the way.
  • It happened to me about a dozen times while I was in high school and a dancer.  I finally had to have surgery to correct the problem.  It completely freaked me out whenever it happened and I always had to knock it back into place myself.  I now cringe whenever I hear about knee injuries.

    *shudders*
  • I've had problems with my knee for years, with basically the exact same experience as Phoeber.

Give it a day or two if you can move it/put wieght on it, and if it's still bugging you a lot, I would see a doctor.  Ligament damage is really bad if you let it go.

If you can't walk on it, I would go in now.
  • My friend did this an had to pop it back in place herself.  Does not sound fun.

My jaw pops out of place.  If I open my mouth too wide, it pops out on the right side, and then immediately pops back in.  If I open my mouth WAY too wide, the right side pops out, then the left, then both back in at about the same time.  The only time it is a problem is when it locks up when I'm chewing, which doesn't happen too often.
  • I'm with Phoeber and Cukiemery.  !5 years of figure skating gives ya wonky knees. The rim on my cartlidge is gone.   I was to a point where I just popped it back in myself.  Surgery fixed the problem.

  • Ouch, aMrs, sounds painful! Sidenote: I didn't know you did figure skating!

This is only the second time it's happened to me. When I saw my rheumatologist the first time, he tested my joints for flexibility and then said, 'how many dislocations have you had?'. He couldn't believe when I said none, because apparently my joints (ligaments, I guess?) are hyper-flexible and that tends to lead to dislocations. I guess my aversion to all things sport (aside from a slight gym-phase in my early 20's) has helped protect me from the inevitable! ;P

  • Hi there!

yep, figure skated for 8 years as a kid and then 15 years later took it up again as an adult so I could coach.  Although I found out my 30 year old body didn't like jumping any more than my 12 year old body did, so I switched to ice dancing.

my knee caps don't discloate anymore, but since the rim on my cartlidge that hold the thigh and calf bones together is gone, I just need to be careful that I don't shift it too fast.  There have been many times where I go to get up from a wierd position and it's "ok, so the next move I make will determine if I go on with the day, or need a run to the ER".

  • I'm doing OK.  Am going to have Easter dinner with a friend and his parents (they came down fom the UK)  H may in St. Tropez, Corsica or Monte Carlo, depending on the weather...bastard.

If your knee is still giving you that much touble, I'd go to the doc.  It takes 5 seconds to pop it back in, but if you keep using it while dislocated, you can sprain it badly and do some ligament damage.   I've never heard of a knee cap popping back in by itself.  I'm sure it can happen, but I've never heard of it.

I'm pretty sure it's back in, hmm... It was intensely painful at first. I forced myself to straighten it out a bit and at some point it stopped hurting so much as it was initially so I presume it went back to where it was supposed to. It just feels sore right now, and is swollen and gives way if I put pressure on it when it's bent. That makes it sound much worse than it is really- I think it's ok! I'll keep my eye on it as this weekend isn't the ideal time to have to find an open doctor!

Great that you have a friend visiting who you can spend Easter with- particularly so given that your H is off in such beautiful places! I just remembered: I forgot to ask how your day of work was last week. How did it go? Do you think you may end up getting more work on board as a result?

  • Work was fine.  I may get more once the guests leave and they need to re-iron everything I already did.  But, yeah, ironing linen sheets that had been a) hard dried and b) left in the dryer did not make for an easy day.  But H says what I got paid was about $200 AUD, so I can live with that.  Plus, since the season is getting ready to start I may be able to pick up ironing wok on other yachts too.

Keep an eye on that swelling, ice for 20 min at a time (any more than 20 and it makes it worse).  keep it elevated etc etc.

My friend here is kind of a strange tale and is very telling as to how small the world of yachting really is.  I met him in the states when he was the First Mate on the boat I sailed.  Once they got to the islands, he jumped ship and went to work on the boat that H was working on when I met him.  They sailed up here and I moved about a month later.  Until two weeks ago, they were docked in the same port as H.
