Re: F/U on Ritalin Post

  • I can't find the thread. Was anyone rude?
    image
  • I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, Expat.  If you are, that's a shame.  If you're not, then I'm glad you found people's responses helpful.
  • Im going to take a shot in the dark and think the "enlightening" part was how people reacted and were insulting, and it enlightened her to the type of people they are. I may be wrong but thats how I read it. Whatever.
  • I hate to say it, but I lost respect for you for even asking that.

    How fucking ridiculous.

  • I really like you, expat, and you usually seem rather rational. BUT asking if people think you should abuse prescription pills because you are "lazy" is stupid. If you have a good reason to be on a med, we can't tell your or prescribe it for you. You need to see a doctor if you think you have a problem. From your post, it sounds like you don't have a diagnosable illness, you are just looking for an easy way to not feel lazy. Its like if someone comes on here and asks if they should do cocaine because they are often tired.

This exactly. Drugs are not a cure for laziness.

  • And if Nebb is right and it enlightened you to the type of person I am, I would say yes. I am a person who can't believe that an educated woman would ask if she should take ritalin to combat her laziness.

I find those people ridiculous. Welcome to me.

  • Also, it baffles me that someone would see what a shitstorm their idiotic question caused and REPOST it to draw MORE attention to it.

    Baffling, I tell ya.

  • i did think aMrs's response about how it's overprescribed to help little boys who can't sit still in class so teachers don't have to work as hard to keep them in line was ridiculous. Out of the 85 kids out of my last student teaching placement, two were on Ritalin. One kid, when he didn't have his meds, was so unfocused he couldn't even write his name on his paper. You could literally see where he lost attention, because he would get the J, than a, then the rest would just be chicken scratch. I haven't been in a classroom situation yet that it was overprescribed. I do admit to only having two years of classroom experience though, where aMrs may have had more (I don't know what her job is).

  • I asked the question because I'm genuinely curious.  I have heard of people taking it who weren't really ADD, and I wondered if that was safe.  I thought it would make for an interesting topic, especially since some of you work in the mental health field.

I was surprised that people reacted as if I were a step away from raiding the neighborhood pharmacy, however.  I thought it was obvious from my language - comparing myself to a sloth, saying that I'm not a pill-person - that I wasn't serious about taking it to cure laziness.

Yes, the responses were a bit surprising and hurtful.  I'd think the regulars would give me the benefit of the doubt...  In any event, it was the first time I'd gotten the full on P&E snark, so I guess I had it coming to me eventually ;)

  • I also never really believe people who post things, get a negative response, and then come back a few days/hours later saying they JUST saw the responses. Just own up to the fact you were trying to lay low.
  • Expat, people reacted to you like they would have reacted to anyone who posted such an assanine question. Sorry it wasn't what you were looking for.

    But i'm not sorry.

  • I dunno Whit. My youngest brother Greg was put on it in grade school because he was always easily distracted, but he'd always been like that. They "diagnosed" him with ADHD and prescribed it to him and it literally made him depressed, he lost his appetite etc. It was awful, my parents eventually made an appointment at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital (it's like, the place for pediatrics in the Western Hemisphere) and they told them the idiot who'd put him on the pills should be investigated and there was nothing wrong with him other than him being a high-energy kid. They took him off the meds and he's fine so I can see where the comment comes from, though it may have been a bit exaggerated :)

  • I dont know how you could expect to not get that response. Without saying "I dont intend to do this, im just curious" how is anyone supposed to know that. Also, why would you even consider it, its called common sense. I should think someone that has any of that would realize it is not a good idea to take a pill for a health issue they dont have.

  • Oh ok Alix. I just haven't had that experience, but I'm sure it will come. For the most parts, parents are actually really wary of meds as a solution.

  • Wow okay....

Expat, you have to know that your thread would cause flames, don't you? You have been on here long enough to know that. I don't think you are an idiot but I do think you had a major brain fart.

Have you tried anything natural to get you motivated. I have found that changing my diet and exercising gets me off my a$$. Taking a pill is not the answer. You don't want an addiction do you? Once you get addicted to something, things go down hill fast. I have a few friends and an uncle addicted to pills, two of them even take their childrens' Ritalin. They are a mess and it's pretty sad. They don't get anything accomplished. They spend most of their time trying to locate more pills. Also, pills can destroy your liver and stomach if you abuse them. HTH.

  • Whit, there's pretty decent documentation.  I can see if I can pull something up.  We looked at some stuff in grad school.
  • Here's the thing, Expat.  I generally like you.  But, I've been frustrated with you in general of late.  I feel like you're smart, and aware, but the last month or so you've posted 752 things about how cute your puppy is and other oddball questions like this.  It just really makes me question you, and I wouldn't be suprised if the regs you were hurt by haven't gone through the same changing opinion.

It's like you gave up common sense entirely for being a constant AW.  The puppy's cute.  Feel free to put him in your sig and leave it at that.

And no, your tone in writing the post did NOT convey that you weren't really interested in this.  You could have achieved that, but you sounded like you were looking for validation for one of the worst medical ideas ever.

  • Squirrly, jump on my bike, would ya?

    I think you're right on.

Not to mention posting questions that are better served for a vet, which we are not.

And Whit, it's a pretty well known epidemic that kids are over diagnosed and ADHD/ADD meds are overprescribed.

Sounds like you're really lucky with your class and your parents! It doesnt surprise me that in general, your state would be more on the conservative side of medicating.

  • I agree with Squirrly; as I said in the last post, I also have given the side-eye to some of the dog questions you've been asking that would be better directed to a vet.
  • Fishy, it's cozy in your head.
  • Amen Squirrly.
