Introducing

May I introduce to you:  Max!
We weren't sure we were going to do it today (in fact, I was teary at breakfast thinking about it), but when we saw him and spent time with him, it was right.

He's a stray that was brought into the rescue group about a month ago. He's currently about 2 months old; still has all puppy teeth. The tip of his tail is bent because it was broken (character). His eyes are grey, like his patches. He appears to be partially housebroken, which thrills me to death.

The house feels alive again, and I think Maggie would approve.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

  • He looks like a sweetheart! I love his spots! Do you know what kind of breeds he has? (That's worded really oddly)

  • Terrier, and not sure what else (but he's got some pretty big feet). He's already 13 pounds, so he could easily top out between 45-50.  The rescue group listed him as a terrier mix. His brother had light brown spots, blue eyes and was deaf.

  • 13 at 2 months! He is gonna be pretty big. Ours is about 8 at 8 weeks. And he has huge feet too. That's sad about his brother. :(

  • Awww he's precious!  His patchy face looks like an Aussie to me.  Maybe that's where he gets his big feet?  He's so cute :)
  • Love him!

Tortis, what kind of dog do you have? He's adorable.

  • Thanks mery! He's a golden retriever. He's being a butt right now though. He's still pretty young and is chewing on freaking everything. Including my feet.

  • I mentioned Aussie to the vet. We have been going to Banfield for a while, so while we were at PetSmart buying supplies, I introduced him to her and got a free look-over (they do wellness checks on Thursdays).  Aussie's probably a good bet (especially with the grey eyes and the blue eyes, and these long legs). The vet was so glad to see him; she knew how long we'd been hurting, even before Maggie was gone.

I would have also taken the deaf one - Maggie was deaf for several years - but I was concerned about how puppies like to run before learning. With Maggie, she didn't do that. We only had one close call; when she followed John across the street and a car was coming.

It will be interesting to see how Max does through the night!

  • The first night was the worst for us by far. Are you guys crating him?

Emmit sleeps in his crate every night and usually has to go out just once or makes it til morning.

  • Not tonight. We're going to try it without a crate at first. He goes a long time between bathroom trips. I didn't get him to the door fast enough (well, didn't get my boots on fast enough) and he had an accident, otherwise, he's been excellent all day.
'Sides, John has night duty always. I can't go back to sleep if I get up like that, but he can. heheh...

If we need to, we'll get a crate over the weekend.

  • I hope he does well! We knew Emmit had no housetraining whatsoever coming in, so we are going the crate route at least until he's 100% housebroken. Housetraining is going ok, but we slipped up a few times today, our fault, not his.

I usually do the middle of the night outside trip (if we need one) and make Jesse get up with him when Emmit's up for the day so I can sleep in! Jess goes to bed really early (he's sleeping now) and I tend to stay up later so we'e worked it out pretty well so far.

Good luck with the training, but from what it sounds like you guys have everything covered and know what you are doing! This is my first dog so I'm like an overprotective parent!
