When to cash checks given pre wedding

We received  a couple checks at the bridal shower and checks in the mail from guests who are not coming to the wedding.  The wedding is 8.4.12.  When is it appropriate to cash the checks?

I would like to wait till after the wedding when we get a joint account but I don't want people to get mad for us holding them.

Thoughts?

Re: When to cash checks given pre wedding

  • I would cash them ASAP.  It is polite to the person who gave you the check so that they know that you received it and that there weren't any issues with their account.

Once the check is cashed make sure to write a thank you note for the gift and get it out into the mail pronto.

  • ASAP.  Your guests were generous to send you something and you kind of owe it to them to not make it difficult for them to balance their checkbook.

[QUOTE]Cash them now and send the TY note ASAP. Don't spend the cash until after the wedding.  You can move the money to a joint account once you're married, or open a joint account now and deposit gift checks in it. I think it's rude to hold on to check for weeks/months on end.

<div>Ditto this - although I would advise against opening a joint account now just because that's one less thing you've got to change your name on once you get married. Unless you're not changing your name, then it really doesn't matter. </div>

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: When to cash checks given pre wedding : We opened a joint account when we got engaged.  All my accounts are at the same bank so changing my name on all the accounts was a breeze.  I know that's not the case for everyone though.

<div>I probably just had a bad experience with my bank. I changed my name and they sent me a new debit card with my old name on it. Twice. I finally had to talk to the manager to get the correct name. It was pretty lame. </div>
  • We opened a joint account before the wedding. It made depositing checks made out to "Mr. and Mrs. Lastname" much easier. When we opened the account, we told them we were engaged. They made a note of the wedding date, and no one gave us any trouble cashing and/or depositing checks.
