Would you ever register for an iPad?

Just curious.  I personally think it's in really bad taste and I'd probably buy the couple some ugly punch bowl they didn't register for if I saw that on their registry.

    Negative.

ETA:  I have a 'friend' on FB that registered for Wii and PS3 games.  Their registry looks more like a Christmas list.

  • No. I don't think it fits within the spirit of the whole "setting up a household" thing. And we had so much other stuff that we needed, and no one in our family could afford that anyway.

I don't know that I'd judge the crap out of someone who did, though. I'm sort of okay with recreational stuff if a couple has everything they need, and it is something they could use together, watching movies during flights or whatever. But it gets a definite side-eye.
  • I thought the whole thing with registering are gifts that you will use in your new life as a married couple. I guess if maybe you each hold a side of the iPad and then use it TOGETHER than maybe. I just don't buy it.

  • Is it a place where you get a discount on registry completion?  We didn't do it, but I've heard of people registering for really expensive stuff so they can buy it later at a discount.

Then add it AFTER the wedding.

    Tacky as hell.
  • I voted yes, but only because you had the option of only if it were under 100. I've seen people register for games and gaming systems. I put it in the same category. I wouldn't buy it for them, but I wouldn't give them the side eye.

  • That's just silly. It's not something that a couple would really use together. I sorta think the ipad is dumb. I love my iphone. I can pretty much do the same stuff, but I dont have a "full size" keyboard. I'm good - I much prefer my laptop. It's way harder to break lol.
  • I don't buy the registry completion thing.  But, maybe some stores are different.  Where we registered we had a year after the wedding to complete the registry and we could add items at any time.  You want to go buy some mac make up for 15% off?  Just bring it to the registry department, have them add it, and buy it 30 seconds later.  That way people don't have to see the items you "want" and won't assume you're a classless asshole.

  • I'd rather buy them an iPad if that's what they really wanted than $500 worth of kitchen crap, personally.  But I'm not of the opinion that wedding gifts are meant to help set up their household, and only for that.

  • Sure, if H and I wanted one, I don't really see how it's different from a gas grill or something like that.

I guess I don't really understand the rules of registries - why are towels okay but paper towels not okay?  Why is a kitchenaid mixer okay but not a wii or an ipad?  I don't get it.
  • Irish!  You're little one is so cute.  Any more photos to share?

  • I don't like this.  I'm cool with some non-traditional things (a gas grill, luggage, etc.), but that seems strange to me.  I don't really think wedding registries are the place for "everything I need."  This seems like more of a fun gadget than something for entertaining in the home (like a TV is, to me).

These may all be artificial delineations.

A friend of mine registered for a 12 pack of Charmin, so I guess anything goes.
  • I wouldn't.  I'm not an Apple product person anyway, though.  But I wouldn't register for a PC or a gaming system, either.

I'm with Opal on my reasoning, I don't think that it's something for "setting up a household."  The price would also get me.

  • I wouldn't register for paper towels, but when I really think about it, getting $75 worth of paper good for the household would be more useful/practical to us than getting a $50 cutting board and a set of wine glasses.

Why is one considered really weird and the other okay?

I disagree.  I mean, I agree, BUT if I wanted Calphalon pots and pans, no one would side eye me putting those on my registry.  I don't NEED them.  I can use a $15 frying pan just fine.  But I want them.  And I'd never buy it for myself, so I put it on my wedding registry.

  • My cousin scanned three big screen TVs, and packs of white t-shirts while his Fiancée wasn't paying attention.
He thought it would be funny, he ended up getting like 5 packs of the t-shirts at the shower.

I think it's odd, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'd give it a raised brow and then find something within my price range.

  • We registered for an Xbox. H had wanted to buy one before the wedding, I said I didn't think it was really appropriate for him to go blow a money on something like that when I was busy spending my money on joint expenses, and the compromise was that he could register for it, and if every single one of his friends decided to go on it on, they could get it for him. It was the only non-traditional thing on the registry and the only thing over a couple hundred bucks, so I didn't feel bad about it. Then again in Chile you can just use a standard registry that includes things like multiple TVs and beds and then use the money people spent on those to buy what you actually want (you get a giftcard, not the items), so I'm about 100% sure no one thought anything of our Xbox.

Of course, no one bought it, but he did use money that a group of friends gave as a gift to buy a PS3 when we were in the US, which I was fine with.
