Re: twilight hoars

• oh my goodness! that's scary. i didn't know that about those meds. although, i'm sure the alternative to not having the meds would be good. do you talk loud because of it?

• haha, yea. especially when I was a kid, it was pretty obnoxious. I can control the volume of my voice better, but DH has to remind me to lower my voice all the time. then I go too far in the other direction and he can't hear me.

[QUOTE]none because none of the effing theaters within a 20 mile radius of where I live offer closed captioning at any showing.

Me too...except I want OPEN captions, where the words are actually on the screen. I hate closed caption in the theater (the rearview mirror thing). I can never get the mirror to stay in one place, then when I finally do, if I move my head even an inch I can't see it anymore. It frustrates me to no end.

oh, words on the screen is closed captioning where I am. I see a tv show that has the symbols "CC" and I see the words on the screen. I thought what you are referring to is open captioning.

the theaters around me don't have words at all. they have assisted listening devices. you know how "helpful" those are.

edit: LP, after googling, I see what you mean now. I just didn't know the difference.

Maybe it's just a local DC thing, but the theatres around here advertise the words on the screen being open captions (or OC), and this: http://ncam.wgbh.org/mopix/ as being closed captioning (or CC). I think it's dumb because on the TV words on the screen = closed captioning, so it should be the same for theatres. DC is just silly like that.

ETA: yeah, the assistive listening devices are crap. All it does is make the mumbling sound louder. Real helpful.

• maybe I ought to just move to DC. the huge hearing impaired community there due to Gallaudet means I wouldn't have issues finding a capable theater. *grumble grumble*

• Have you used Fomdi before? It can help you find captioned movies: www.fomdi.com. It's pretty cool. but yeah, DC generally has more captioned options than other areas of the country. One of the perks of living here.

And, Gallaudet plays free captioned movies on a big screen in the student center on Friday/Saturday nights. All movies that are already out on DVD, but at least they're free!

• "Fomdi searched 190 theaters and says there are no captioned movies." that was with a 40 mile radius too.

Holy cow. You should contact the corporate office for whatever major theatre chain is near you and complain. That's ridiculous! i know it seems unlikely that they'll actually do anything, but it can't hurt to try.

• I've been considering that anyway. I didn't really care until Eclipse came out, because it's my favorite book in the series and I really wanted to see it on the big screen. but I usually put off watching so many movies because I want to catch the dialogue the first time. it's just getting annoying to not watch movies or ask my fellow moviegoers what was said in the film.

• Seriously, do it. I wonder sometimes if theatres realize how much potential profit they miss out on by not offering captions to make movies accessible. Not only for younger deaf/hard of hearing people like us, but the increasing number of elderly people who have hearing loss as well.

• My FI wanted to see it so I went with him, it was kinda bizzare

• Pooh! I didn't know that about you.
Just over a year ago I posted here about a family friend who was in Phoenix on vacation and went in to a meningitis-induced coma in his hotel room...he is fine now, but has suffered major hearing loss as well. He's got a hearing aid in both ears now, and can hear with those, but they tell him gradually it will get worse.

• dang, that sucks P2. I couldn't imagine losing that much hearing in adulthood, and knowing it will get worse. ugh.
