BABIES!

Re: BABIES!

  • I am having two and a half babies. I plan on one being a dwarf. I am naming all of them George. Even the girls.

If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on the cat. image

  • Irina actually isn't that uncommon of a name.

Our serious baby names: Nikolai Alexander (Nik or Nikky), and Vivian Rose (which my mom hates because it's too old fashioned).

[QUOTE]I mean I wouldn't pick those exact names, but no it wasn't particularly aimed at you. Anca and Irina are, umm, special, as are those Irish names even though those came after I posted, I just mean in general I've been judging people since baby names have been such a hot topic and everyone is so focused on being unique that it's getting out of hand.

My FI is Romanian, and those are popular Romanian names. And they are a lot less weird than some of them he suggested. I kind of like the sound of Irina the way he says it. I would never name my kid Irene, though, which is the English equivalent. At least I'm not making up spellings.

According to babyology.com, the most popular Romanian names include Rodica (f), Dracul (m), and Calin (m). I don't think Irina, Elena, and Anca are all that bad.
My heritage is Cajun, and I am so tired of everyone being named the same saint names.

Okay, on that we can agree. FWIW, my daughters both have family names (maiden names on both sides of my family), so I would be QUITE surprised if you picked those exact names for any potential children.

  • I wanted to name my first daughter Chloe, but then I got a cat and named her Chloe, so that'd be weird. I like the name Cameron for a boy.
My parents got an F- for naming me. I knew that already though, since I know a shitton of Jessicas. I tried to do my FI's name(Arden) but for some reason it wouldn't load.

  • My mother was going to name me Chastity, but my father talked her out of it. The only decent thing that man did for me.

  • I don't feel I am focused on being unique using Irish names. The spellings are accurate, they are easy to pronounce in English and they are extremely common for the culture. I really dislike crazy spellings of common names or made-up shiit that sounds trendy. Otherwise, like the pp, I like to focus on our heritage. Middle names will probably be family names, of which our families share many due to our heritage being so similar.

FWIW I judge you for being so critical of names that seem to be outside your idea of "normal" that are actual names, not made-up shiit, spelled correctly and come from cultures directly related to the people thinking of using them. Narrow-minded, much?

  • I guess I should have focused more on the fact that I didn't really mean this thread. The names I mentioned are not names I would choose, but that's because, as you guys pointed out, that is not my heritage and it wouldn't make much sense. I was really more referring to threads in the past (some of them in sucrets' naming thread were heinous) and in general about the trend of crazy names. Also I just don't like when people pull out random names to be unique, I think it's pretentious and mean to the child, but actually using a family name or from your own culture is something different and expected I think.

And I will agree with all of you that family/cultural/otherwise important names are not at all the same thing as made up crap or made up spellings, which is what really bothers me.

Sorry if I offended anyone, I really don't think my opinion of names makes me narrow minded, I just think some people make shiit up.

BTW, Jaetyn is a "real" name, but is made up and American, I chose it randomly from babynames.com just because.

  • So DH and I talk about babies a lot. He wants to be a daddy sooo bad that he wanted to pick out names beforehand. We've had these freaking names picked out for like, a year. We plan on 2 or 3, but we'll see. So for a girl, it'll be Ava Lois. If we have a boy, it'll be Oliver Bernard. Yeah, they're kinda old-timey, but we used ancestors' names and stuff, because we're cool.

  • Oh, I am totally with you on the making up names and spellings, TLV. I don't get it either. I work at a university and every year the names get more convoluted. Just because a kid has a familiar sounding name doesn't mean I know how to spell it anymore!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: BABIES! : Grow some balls, tlv, and name some names. If that was aimed at me, I can deal with the fact that you don't like my daughters' names. I have my reasons, and I would rather them not have to be referred to as "Frank Baker," "Frank Bones," and "Frank Beans." Yes, I have 3 boys in 1 class with same first name and same last initial. It's a PITA.

  • Sarah, I'm making these up. Not gonna put the real names of my current students out there on the Interwebz. Privacy issues and all. I will throw out a name of a former student, though. Special Edwards. Yes, that was her given name. Ironic part is that she was VERY smart.
